Arvin Global Solutions (AGS)
AGMA member Arvin Global Solutions is offering a training course March 7-9, 2017 in Naperville, IL. Finding qualified gear process engineers is a common challenge in the gear manufacturing industry and companies are often faced with the need to train internal resources on their own. However, this can be a very long process and can put a strain on existing engineering staff.  By utilizing the AGS training experience, trainees can acquire a comprehensive overview of gear processing from leading industry experts; resulting in a skilled process engineer much faster and for far less cost. Complete information available here. Registration deadline is Feb. 15.

Manufacturing Business Technology
Industry 4.0 is based on autonomous Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) which are fundamentally physical objects with embedded software, communication and computing power. The CPS will include manufactured products with their own intelligence and self-management capabilities. Alongside smart products will be manufacturing equipment that is software enhanced to form Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS). These machines will have their own computing power and leverage data from a wide range of embedded sensors and actuators.

Here’s how the labor market looks in the U.S. economy of 2017. To begin with, ever since the jobless rate first fell below 5% early last year—this year’s January reading was 4.8%, versus 4.7% in December—the economy has been near full employment. One implication is that the usual call to increase jobs makes little sense. A ramp-up in government spending on infrastructure would mainly have a crowding-out effect on the private sector; workers taken on by government would be denied to weaker firms.

GE is focusing efforts on driving AM, after a disappointing Q4 2016. This certainly seems to be a smart approach; Dario Mantegazza, an Avio Aero manufacturing engineer, said it best, when he described 3D printing as having "no limits to complexity." GE Aviation has facilities in Germany and Sweden, where they acquired majority stakes in Arcam and in Concept Laser last year. The company has a factory in Auburn, Alabama, and also owns AM pioneer Morris Technologies, located in southwest Ohio. But Joyce says the little Italian town of Cameri, and Avio Aero, are an important part of GE’s overall AM business strategy and will be "at the center of the growth of our additive ecosystem."

Canada's economy may be returning to health after an oil shock, but keeping up that momentum could hinge on whether manufacturers show more resilience. Gross domestic product grew 0.4 percent in November after a surprise 0.2 percent contraction the prior month, Statistics Canada said Tuesday, and advances in exports and jobs have economists projecting fourth-quarter growth at a 1.6 percent annual pace. Yet factories weigh on the outlook: despite a November rebound, they still aren't growing steadily enough to serve as a reliable economic engine.
