New orders for U.S. manufactured capital goods rebounded in October, driven by rising demand for machinery and a range of other equipment, the latest indication of an acceleration in economic growth early in the fourth quarter.
The 21st Century has been unkind to U.S. manufacturing workers. In January 2000, there were 17.2 million Americans employed in manufacturing. In January 2016, there were 12.3 million, a workforce about 1.5 million smaller than when the U.S. entered the Great Recession in December 2007. And the questions that have been gnawing at Americans are: Can we do anything about this? And if so, what?
The health of the U.S. manufacturing sector, as well as the outcome of a highly anticipated meeting of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries, are among the highlights of a heavy week of economic data following the Thanksgiving holiday.

3D printing is no longer a technology of the future — it’s here now and it’s here to stay. The layer-by-layer manufacturing technique (also known as additive manufacturing) has grown in popularity over the past six years as the maker movement has swept the world. Many people have become familiar with desktop polymer printers, but companies have their sights set on more industrial 3D printing processes that allow them to design and automatically print metal parts.

BMW has been showing off and testing its latest technologies for the future of autonomous and connected vehicles for the logistics industry, although the innovations are intended for application in its own supply chain.
Given its focus on innovation and an increasing reliance on connected products, the manufacturing industry is particularly vulnerable to cyber risks. To assess the landscape, Deloitte and MAPI conducted a cyber risk in advanced manufacturing study. Led by Deloitte’s Center for Industry Insights, the study is informed by 35 executive interviews and 225 survey responses collected in collaboration with Forbes Insights. The study examines six emerging themes and offers manufacturers insights into what they should do to be secure, vigilant, and resilient in addressing cyber risk.

One thing that is true in every industry, but definitely a major issue for manufacturers, is the need for employees to remember multiple sets of credentials to login to applications during their work day. They need one set to access their computer, another to access the ERP system, possibly another for email and so forth. For managers that need access to other applications, such as time and attendance, HR or financial systems, the problem becomes even more complicated.
