By covered wagon and jetliner, from East Coast to West, Rust Belt to Sun Belt, Americans’ propensity to be on the move – to new jobs and new places – has historically provided the economy with a critical dose of oomph.
But as fewer and fewer Americans are loading up the moving van in search of opportunity, that advantage may be slipping away. In recent years, economists have become increasingly worried that a slide in job turnover and relocation rates is undermining the economy’s dynamism, damping productivity and wages while making it more difficult for sidelined workers to find their way back into the labor force.

This seminar provides the gear design engineer with a broad understanding of the methods used to manufacture and inspect gears and how the resultant information can be applied and interpreted in the design process. Students of this course will also be given a tour of AGMA Member, Gear Tec.
A new survey of global manufacturing companies shows that nearly four in ten expect to devote significant spending towards advanced technologies over the next two years.

U.S. exports of manufacturing equipment fell for the third year in a row in 2015, according to a series of reports issued by the Commerce Department.
Horsburgh and Scott
Horsburgh and Scott completed building the largest replacement gearbox they have ever manufactured. The unit is a gigantic Reduction Stand #2 (R2) Steel Rolling Mill Gearbox manufactured by Horsburgh and Scott to replace a 30 year old unit for a large steel company in Ohio. The R2 gearbox is the second in a series of five or six reduction stand gearboxes that roll steel sheets into a desired thickness, thinner and thinner through each gearbox, and after going through final finishing stand gearboxes, produce steel as thin as 1/8 of an inch.

A public-private team led by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has created a new international standard that can 'map' the critically important environmental aspects of manufacturing processes, leading to significant improvements in sustainability while keeping a product's life cycle low cost and efficient.
There are many factors that will play into the ultimate shift of 3D printing as a technology for rapid prototyping to one of end-part manufacturing, but the one area of additive manufacturing (a.m.) that may stand in the way of mass adoption of 3D printing within the larger manufacturing supply chain is that of metal a.m.

The U.S. manufacturing sector, which has been on a decades-long slide, is increasingly attracting foreign capital from Asia and Europe, a recent study found.
The U.S. ISM manufacturing index might have fallen lower than break-even in May. Societe Generale, in a research report, said the ISM manufacturing index might have dropped to 49.8. Given the regional manufacturing gauges, factory activity in the period is expected to have weakened.

Klüber Lubrication
Undesired noises and vibrations inside cars pose a consistent challenge to automakers, especially when new models are being launched. With a new series of highly efficient sliding fluids Klüber Lubrication now puts an end to undesirable squeaking noises. The universal sliding fluids of the Klüberalfa MR 3 series were developed especially for NVH requirements combined with for-life lubrication of seals, guide-ways and plastics. They are resistant to evaporation and form a film ensuring optimum lubricant supply to the friction points over a long time.
Industry Week
I see three ways in which smaller manufacturers can leverage Smart Manufacturing. The first, is the way applicable to all manufacturers—using today’s affordable sensors to get better data, then using that data to fine-tune the process, decrease variability and remove bottlenecks. All of these bring costs down and drive quality up.

With the IoT making its way into businesses and vehicles of all kinds. It follows that agriculture would be one of the fields that can benefit from a network of connected "things." Ron Zink, director of On-Board Applications for John Deere’s Intelligent Solutions Group, talked to Computerworld about deploying sensors, wireless communications, and autonomous driving technology on farm systems.

In an era of expanded digital networks, smarter connected devices and integrated systems, businesses are turning to data-driven intelligence to guide decisions to help improve efficiency and protect their bottom line. For operations with lift truck fleets, telemetry programs can produce a wealth of relevant small data insights for quick conversion into actionable business intelligence.
Industrial Distribution
Data suggests there is a large manufacturing skills gap that continues to grow and will leave millions of jobs unfulfilled by 2025. Others suggest that data is misleading and that the "gap" is an inflated myth. But, when I ask almost any industrial distribution company or association executive about the state of hiring across the market, they say it’s a rough time for recruiting, and has been for several years.
General Electric recently opened a new additive manufacturing line, which will use laser technology to 3D print end burners for gas turbine combustion chambers, at the GE Oil and Gas plant in Talamona, Italy. An automated nozzle production line has also been opened.
Connecticut’s state college system is partnering with some of the state’s biggest manufacturers in an attempt to place graduates directly into open positions. The partnership will kick off with a push called 300 jobs, 300 days, which will aim to boost enrollment in the state’s advanced manufacturing courses.
Romax is collaborating with Technical University Darmstadt to develop a simulation model to predict gearbox efficiency, by supporting a PhD student from the Technical University Darmstadt in Germany on a project to develop a model that predicts the power loss of a complete transmission.
A contract to supply two complete intake screening plants for a pumping station on the East Coast of the United States was awarded to Ovivo’s Energy group. Through its heritage brand Brackett Green, Ovivo will supply equipment which complies with the requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency Clean Water Act 316 (b) standard of 0.5 foot per second velocity through the water intake traveling screens. Ovivo will also provide a fish return system to allow fish to be collected and safely returned back to the water source. The delivery of the project is scheduled for the second quarter of fiscal 2018.
