Forbes For the last three years, manufacturing activity has been growing more rapidly than the overall U.S. economic GDP. This is the first time this has happened in more than 50 years. The factors that have led to this oddity are sustainable and that manufacturing and overall industrial growth will probably continue to outpace overall GDP growth rates in the United States for some time.

Brookings There is a "clear need for reinvesting in our manufacturing sector to take advantage of some of the broader underlying economic trends," said Jason Miller, the White House special assistant to the president for manufacturing policy, in his keynote address at the John White, Jr. Forum on Public Policy on regional manufacturing hubs.
 
Brookings As noted in a recent White House report, the manufacturing industry is growing, but there is still much work to be done. The sector comprises 12 percent of the overall economy and greater investments in community colleges and trade schools are necessary. Stronger STEM emphasis in primary and secondary schools in addition to a renewed emphasis on shop classes will help build vocational skills. Although still in their preliminary stages, the existing hubs are already helping to create jobs.
 
Bloomberg U.K. manufacturing unexpectedly slumped the most in 16 months in May, indicating the economy may have struggled to maintain momentum in the second quarter. Factory output plunged 1.3 percent from April, the most since January 2013 and the first decline in six months.
 
WAMC With manufacturers in Massachusetts struggling to find trained people to hire, Governor Deval Patrick announced a pilot program between two community colleges funded by a partnership that includes some of the state’s biggest companies. The program run jointly by Springfield Technical Community College and Holyoke Community College aims to take unemployed and under-employed people and give them the skills needed to get an entry level job in manufacturing.

Nasdaq Mexican industrial production rose in May for a fifth consecutive month, led by gains in manufacturing that continued to be the main driver of economic growth in the second quarter. Industrial output rose 0.11% from April in seasonally adjusted terms, a fifth consecutive increase, and was up 1.6% from May of 2013.

U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.), who leads Manufacturing Jobs for America, applauded passage of the bipartisan, bicameral Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), which will reauthorize, streamline, and improve the nation’s workforce training programs for the first time since 1998.

Aerospace Manufacturing and Design Senior Aerospace AMT, a manufacturer of structural parts for leading original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the large commercial jet market, will be opening satellite operations in Charleston County, creating 60 new skilled jobs. Senior Aerospace AMT is owned by the international engineering group Senior plc.
 
Aerospace Manufacturing and Design Methods Machine Tools Inc., a supplier of precision machine tools, automation, and accessories for more than 55 years, held a successful grand opening at their new technology center in Anaheim, Calif. on June 25 - 26, 2014. A ribbon cutting and traditional Japanese sake-barrel smashing celebration kicked off the event, which drew manufacturing professionals interested in the latest machine tool technology.
 
Forest City Gear Company
The Tennessean Volkswagen will expand its Chattanooga plant to build a new midsize SUV, adding 2,000 jobs, and will establish a new research and development center there, bringing an additional 200 jobs, the German automaker said Monday. The world's No. 3 automaker said it would invest $900 million to introduce the new SUV, including a $600 million investment in Tennessee, and begin producing the vehicle at the end of 2016.
 
Manufacturing.net General Motors Co. has named an Infiniti executive to head its Cadillac division, which has struggled with sagging U.S. sales this year while competing luxury brands have advanced. GM announced that Johan de Nysschen will become president of Cadillac and a GM executive vice president, starting Sept. 1. Cadillac will operate as a global brand and "more distinct" business unit, the company said.
