Northern Life Joy Global Inc. announced Friday it was buying Mining Technologies International for $51 million Cdn. MTI, which is based in Lively but has offices across Canada and the U.S., manufactures underground mining equipment for North American markets. It employs about 250 people.

Stamford Advocate Manufacturers across Connecticut are more upbeat about their position in the improving economy, but while state government has taken steps to create a business-friendly environment, they say more can be done. The Manufacturing Alliance of Connecticut, in its second annual industry-wide survey, found that while most manufacturers are forecasting increased employment levels, they have difficulty finding qualified employees.

Optics.org Acknowledging the growing importance of additive manufacturing (3D printing) the UK’s Association of Industrial Laser Users last week hosted a workshop to "help attendees separate fact from over-sold fiction". The event was entitled Metal Additive Manufacturing: Opportunities in Applications and Improvements in Process Technology and took place in Sheffield, aka "the Steel City", which has long association with metals processing.
 
Aviation Week Pratt & Whitney’s president of aftermarket, Matthew Bromberg, predicts that maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) shops in the future will "print" the parts they need with additive manufacturing technologies, speeding up repair tasks and reducing stored inventory. "It will work. It will be efficient. It’s the way the industry will go," said Bromberg, speaking at Aviation Week’s MRO America conference in Phoenix on April 9.

CNBC British manufacturing grew much more strongly than expected in February, another sign that the country's economy has kept up its strong pace going into 2014, official data showed on Tuesday. Manufacturing output expanded by 1.0 percent in February from January - its biggest increase since September last year - and was 3.8 percent higher than in the same month of 2013, the Office for National Statistics said.
 
The Sacramento Bee Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed into law a bill that eliminates sales taxes on electricity and natural gas purchased by manufacturers and mining smelters, a move she said was needed to make the state more attractive to large businesses.

Champion GSE is touting the first-ever, dual-purpose stand may be used for both the -1B and -2B GEnx engine platforms. The division of Springfield-based The Champion Co. unveiled the product late Tuesday at the MRO Americas conference.
 
Springfield News-Sun A Springfield manufacturer will add about 15 jobs and spend as much as $13 million to expand and buy new equipment to treat parts for Honda. The company, which is also investing as much as $3 million at a separate facility in Urbana, has seen steady growth in recent years and most recently expanded previously in 2009, said Joe Gummel, executive vice president of Parker Trutec.
