Manufacturers that thrive despite constant threats and disruptions to their business are finding clever ways to connect their entire operation including machines, processes, software, and most importantly people. There are still many opportunities to capitalize on, and even low-hanging fruit, but finding and exploiting them requires specific efforts to prioritize interoperability and composability for system and process integration. On Wednesday, November 2 from 1:00 - 2:00 pm, Russ Waddell, community lead at Tulip, will present "Composable Manufacturing Systems," the latest installment in the free AGMA Emerging Technology Webinar Series funded by the AGMA Foundation.

Learn how to develop and understand customer gear drive application specifications and target performance expectations.  Review, calculate and select basic gear terminology variables and design parameters which define tooth bending and contact rating safety factors on two real life examples.  Learn how to fit new gear designs and ratios into existing center distance.  Use commercially available software to calculate and optimize gear set power density.  Discuss time and cost of more than 20 other gear drive component functions and drive development steps through prototypes to shipment of compliant assembled production drives.  There will be an opportunity to discuss gear design challenges which may be unique to participant industries.

As manufacturing processes have become increasingly complex as a result of evolving consumer expectations and an ever-changing competitive landscape, business have become more and more reliant on data to navigate the complexity and guide their decisions. This is often easier said than done as many manufacturers rely on outdated production tracking and business management techniques. For instance, some manufacturers record business data via paper-based methods while others rely on very basic Excel spreadsheets to manage their data entry.

The macro high-speed recordings are impressive: Viewed in slow motion, a carbide milling tool removes a perfectly shaped brass chip. The Blaser Synergy 735 metalworking fluid becomes cloudy around the curling chip—exactly where the heat is greatest. It leaves an oil-like phase and thus forms an even more effective lubricating emulsion. In an extensive series of tests in the in-house Technology Center, the metalworking fluid experts from Blaser Swisslube analyze machining processes down to the finest detail.
