This half-day online seminar is intended to provide you with a thorough understanding of the information contained within a typical gear inspection report.  Specifically, we will look at the contents and meaning of the information contained within the gear charts, as well as the techniques used by the gear measurement system to assess gear quality.
Learn what is required for the design of an optimum gear set and the importance of the coordinated effort of the gear design engineer, the gear metallurgist, and the bearing system engineer. Investigate gear-related problems, failures, and improved processing procedures.

Explore gear grinding processes, machine kinematics and set-up, pitfalls, failures and expectations related to finish ground gearing.  Learn definitions of gearing component features, process steps from blanking, through heat treatment to finished part ready to ship.  Study aspects of Quality Assurance, Inspection Documentation and corrective actions for measured non-conformances.  Understand pre-heat treat, heat treatment and post-heat treatment operations including the hows and whys to produce finished gears that conform and perform to end user expectations.

Learn how to develop and understand customer gear drive application specifications and target performance expectations.  Review, calculate and select basic gear terminology variables and design parameters which define tooth bending and contact rating safety factors on two real life examples.  Learn how to fit new gear designs and ratios into existing center distance.  Use commercially available software to calculate and optimize gear set power density.  Discuss time and cost of more than 20 other gear drive component functions and drive development steps through prototypes to shipment of compliant assembled production drives.  There will be an opportunity to discuss gear design challenges which may be unique to participant industries.

GWJ Technology GmbH introduces a new version of SystemManager as an extension of eAssistant as a web solution and TBK as a classic desktop application. SystemManager is an easy-to-use extension of the GWJ solutions eAssistant and TBK for individual machine elements, such as shafts, bearings, connections, and various gear types, for the design and optimization of gearbox systems, such as multi-stage gearboxes, power-split and manual gearboxes, etc.
Automotive World
Citroën and ubitricity, a member of the Shell Group, have signed a cooperation agreement to make e-mobility more accessible for drivers in European cities. The collaboration aims to encourage drivers to switch to electric vehicles (EVs) and help more cities to offer on-street EV charging to their residents.

The Vässla Pedal has just launched as the Swedish mobility startup’s latest futuristic-looking electric bike, complete with high performance parts like torque-sensing pedal assist functionality. The Swedes have never been one to shy away from bold two-wheeler designs, and the Vässla Pedal isn’t about to change that tradition.
American Machinist
In the current state of machining and manufacturing technology, constant technological innovation puts pressure on operations to be relentlessly reactive, to adopt what’s new, now, in order to remain competitive. In short, to implement Industry 4.0 concepts in their organizations. This is a daunting task, especially for smaller machining operations. In 2022, how can machine shops start to create smarter organizations? What do they have to gain by doing so?

Boeing
Boeing and its joint venture partner Wisk recently released a roadmap for transitioning to a future where automated and uncrewed aircraft can safely carry passengers and cargo in urban and suburban areas. The concept of operations lays out the technology, regulatory and social recommendations needed to deploy Urban Air Mobility (UAM) in the United States and integrate it into the national airspace system.
Cutting Tool Engineering
Even as North American manufacturers and other companies continue to buy robots at record rates, hundreds of thousands of companies that are suitable candidates for automation have yet to install even a single robot, said Jeff Burnstein, president of Association for Advancing Automation, also known as A3.
Metal AM
Hitachi Metals, Ltd., Japan, has released its ADMUSTER C21P nickel-base alloy powder for metal additive manufacturing, enabling the production of complex shapes with high corrosion resistance and high strength. The alloy, one of the powders in Hitachi Metals’ ADMUSTER series, is reported to additively manufacture products with around 100 times or more the corrosion resistance of typical 316L stainless steel.

NASA
NASA’s InSight lander has detected seismic waves from four space rocks that crashed on Mars in 2020 and 2021. Not only do these represent the first impacts detected by the spacecraft’s seismometer since InSight touched down on the Red Planet in 2018, but it also marks the first time seismic and acoustic waves from an impact have been detected on Mars.
Power Transmission Engineering
Bonfiglioli presents the new high performant 800 series which comes in five sizes from 25,000 to 160,000 Nm in marine-resistant paint, suitable for blast cleaning. Easy and fast assembly of the 800 series gearboxes into the winch drum is a key feature of their design.
GE
GE will provide four new Fixed Series Capacitor (FSC) systems at two Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) switching stations. The new FSC banks will add 475 MW of capacity, allowing for more stable renewable energy use as part of LA’s Green New Deal to transition to 100 perecnt renewable energy. The work is expected to be substantially completed within the next two and a half years.
