AGMA Updates
The goal of the AGMA Emerging Technology committees is to Identify, investigate and inform AGMA members of Emerging Technologies that may disrupt or significantly impact the power transmission industry. This year was filled with discussions about electric vehicle drivetrain, new drives in the robotics space were introduced, we talked with many IIoT companies to help you on your shop floor, and we will recap our tour of the RAPID 2022 show floor and update you on advances in the 3D printing space.
Learn how to develop and understand customer gear drive application specifications and target performance expectations.  Review, calculate and select basic gear terminology variables and design parameters which define tooth bending and contact rating safety factors on two real life examples.  Learn how to fit new gear designs and ratios into existing center distance.  Use commercially available software to calculate and optimize gear set power density.  Discuss time and cost of more than 20 other gear drive component functions and drive development steps through prototypes to shipment of compliant assembled production drives.  There will be an opportunity to discuss gear design challenges which may be unique to participant industries.
Learn the fundamentals of gear manufacturing in this hands-on course. Gain an understanding of gearing and nomenclature, principles of inspection, gear manufacturing methods, and hobbing and shaping. Utilizing manual machines, develop a deeper breadth of perspective and understanding of the process and physics of making a gear as well as the ability to apply this knowledge in working with CNC equipment commonly in use.

Learn and understand the fundamentals of gear manufacturing. Acquire knowledge and understanding of gear nomenclature, hobbing and shaping of spur and helical gears, and splines. Learn and understand hobber and shaper machine set-up, as well as gear tooth element inspection. Understand the manufacturing process before gear tooth cutting, as well as post-cutting processes. Apply concepts to further finishing processes, i.e., heat treat, gear tooth shaving, and grinding and/or skiving. Gain knowledge to establish a solid foundation for all basic gear manufacturing.
Manufacturers in every industry are adopting robotic automation at an accelerating rate.  The investment required for automation is often significant and comes with a host of options.  What type or size of Robot should be selected? What throughput can be achieved through this new system? Will the workcell fit into my production line? All of these questions can be answered with Robot Simulation Software. This multi-function tool is invaluable in modeling complicated manufacturing systems. In addition to explaining how Robot Simulation Software can be utilized, this presentation will provide Case Studies that demonstrate how simulation early in the project can avoid later problems with Robot integration.
Learn what is required for the design of an optimum gear set and the importance of the coordinated effort of the gear design engineer, the gear metallurgist, and the bearing system engineer. Investigate gear-related problems, failures, and improved processing procedures.
Technology is fundamentally changing manufacturing. To keep up in today’s marketplace, designers and manufacturers need to follow the emerging trends and communicate the latest ideas with their fellow experts in the field. AGMA’s annual Fall Technical Meeting (FTM) is the perfect forum for this. Each year, 30 authors are selected by AGMA to write peer-reviewed technical papers on topics relevant to the gear industry. Topics include: design, analysis, manufacturing, quality, materials, metallurgy, heat treatment, operation, maintenance, efficiency, and gear failure. Authors present the results of their papers in a single-track conference, which means you don’t have to pick and choose which presentations to attend. With a full registration you receive copies of all papers, are able to see all the presentations, ask questions to all the presenters, and network with your peers over three days.

Kennametal has introduced the new Grooving Universal Positive Profiling geometry (GUP-V), expanding on its Beyond Evolution grooving and cut-off platform. With the addition of the new V-shaped single-sided insert, Beyond Evolution can cover now more applications than ever and helps to save tooling cost.

Aerospace Manufacturing
Velo3D has announced that StarHagen, a provider of high-quality production parts for aerospace companies, has joined the Velo3D Contract Manufacturer Network with the purchase of an end-to-end solution from the additive manufacturing technology company. The Sapphire printer acquired by StarHagen is calibrated to print in Inconel 625, a nickel-based superalloy designed for high strength, and to resist high temperatures and corrosion.

CEO Cameron Chell told stakeholders that the drone industry was finally beginning to develop scale and live up to market projections: “So we do see—and for the first time, believe—these industry projections of going to $40 billion or having the potential to go to $40 billion by 2028,” said Chell.  “The constraining item there is not demand, which is really exciting. The constraining item there is infrastructure capacity, regulation, the ability—supply chain, the things to keep up to the demand.”

Liebherr-Australia has announced the expansion of its Perth mining facility, which will strengthen the company’s ability to deliver accelerated zero-emission solutions to the wider market. Liebherr-Australia’s growing involvement in the development and implementation of zero emission technology with Australian customers illustrates the necessity for this investment in infrastructure and signifies Liebherr’s commitment to these industry-leading projects.
Windpower Engineering & Development
The California Energy Commission (CEC) has adopted a report establishing offshore wind goals and moving the state one step closer to development of the clean energy resource off California’s coast. Preliminary findings in the report set planning goals of 2,000 to 5,000 MW of offshore wind by 2030 and 25,000 MW by 2045.

The Biden-Harris administration, through the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), has issued a Request for Information (RFI) on the development and implementation of a $675 million Critical Materials Research, Development, Demonstration and Commercialization Program. Funded by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the program will address vulnerabilities in the domestic critical materials supply chain, which are both an economic disadvantage and an impediment to the clean energy transition.
Automotive World
Utopia for the automotive industry is the development and validation of vehicles in a virtual world alone, removing a requirement for physical prototypes. Whilst the industry has come a long way in moving towards this goal by frontloading vehicle engineering through simulation, there are elements that are proving very challenging to accurately replicate. One of the areas coming under increased focus as the industry has shifted away from using the internal combustion engine is the accurate modelling of electrified powertrain NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness).
