The webinar “Improvement of Gear Life and Performance” by Nitrex takes place Thursday, March 3, 2022. This presentation is a walk-through of a number of practical ways to optimize gears for greater results. Focusing on surface treatments, primarily nitriding and carburizing, the Nitrex speakers bring different perspectives and industry-specific know-how and practices to the topic – from the view of an equipment supplier and a commercial heat-treating services provider.

The highest level of tensions in the U.S. relationship with China and Russia in at least the past 40 years has been described as a new “Cold War 2.0” and is rapidly reshaping the global security landscape.  For companies in the bearing and gear industries (and related areas), this means new challenges when exporting to key markets, sharing technology across borders, and expanding overseas sales.  In this webinar, a panel of practitioners will unpack these developments, explain what they mean in practical terms for your business, and help you prepare for further rises in global tensions throughout 2022 and into 2023.

A good understanding of individual failure modes and the failure scenarios that led to the actual system failure is an essential skill to designing gear/bearing systems that will operate properly for their full design life.

Days after a Canadian border blockade was broken up, the auto industry is facing a serious dilemma. Over the past three decades, manufacturers have adopted “lean” manufacturing. Largely lifted from the Toyota production system, the complex strategy relies heavily on things like automation and other labor-saving steps. But the centerpiece is a system known as just-in-time, or JIT, production, which has sharply reduced the amount of inventory maintained at automotive factories. That approach, it turns out, is extremely vulnerable to disruptions that can quickly bring factories to a halt.

Lamborghini hopes it can continue producing cars with internal combustion engines into the next decade, CEO Stephan Winkelmann told a German newspaper this week. “After hybridization, we will wait to see whether it will be possible to offer vehicles with an internal combustion engine beyond 2030,” he said in an interview with the outlet. “One possibility would be to keep combustion engine vehicles alive via synthetic fuels.”

Yamaha Motor has been commissioned by Toyota to develop a 5.0-liter V8 engine that can run on hydrogen. In Japan, Toyota and other automotive-related companies are about to begin a collaborative effort to expand the range of fuel options for internal combustion engines. Toyota has already been running a hydrogen-adapted GR Yaris engine fitted to one of its Corolla models in the Super Taikyu race series in Japan.

3D Natives
Additive manufacturing is spreading quickly all over the globe, but nowhere as much as where it all started, the United States. From 1987 when stereolithography was first introduced by Chuck Hull to the advent of the first metal AM technologies in the 1990, AM has only continued to grow over the years in the U.S., a country which consistently tops the lists for largest installed base of 3D printers in the world.

It seems that Essentium could soon join the ranks of companies producing metal 3D printers. Metal 3D printers are in high demand due to the gradual transformation of certain industries towards additive approaches. In particular, the aerospace and automotive sectors have adopted AM as a standard approach for making certain types of parts for production.

The word “optimization” is becoming fashionable with regard to gear design. It is applied to both macro-geometry and micro-geometry. The approach can be of various types: analytical pre-optimization with different objectives, bulk generation of variants, multi-objective and multi-disciplinary commercial optimizers, generative optimization, and even artificial intelligence. However, these are all scenarios that assume the manufacturer will accept any geometry indicated by the designer. This is certainly not the case with the industrial gearboxes on catalog for which standard cutting tools are used to reduce cost and keep available the interchange of suppliers, nor with special gearboxes, “goods to order,” in which the producers try to use cutting tools already in the tool room.
