AGMA Updates
Learn and understand fundamentals of gear manufacturing. Acquire knowledge and understanding of gear nomenclature, hobbing and shaping of spur and helical gears, and splines. Learn and understand hobber and shaper machine set-up, as well as gear tooth element inspection. Understand the manufacturing process before gear tooth cutting, as well as post cutting processes. Apply concepts to further finishing processes, I.e. heat treat, gear tooth shaving and grinding and/or skiving. Gain knowledge to establish a solid foundation for all basic gear manufacturing.
Join AGMA’s Director, Emerging Technology, Mary Ellen Doran as she outlines for you the work of the four emerging technology committees. Learn all about 3D printing, Electric Drive Technology, IIoT and Robotics and Automation as it relates directly to the gear industry. This webinar is sponsored by the AGMA Foundation, and is free for AGMA members.

National Law Review
For the past several months, the media have been reporting on the general labor shortage in the U.S. Most manufacturers have been understaffed in their factories for even longer than this news cycle, but current events have transformed what before 2020 was merely a typical challenge for manufacturers seeking to hire enough people, into a dilemma that for many is mission-critical. Even if understaffed manufacturers have been able to hit most or all customer deadlines this year, continuing to operate with staffing shortages for too long can cause short- and long-term damage to workforces and therefore businesses.

Production at U.S. factories surged in July, boosted by an acceleration in motor vehicle output as auto makers either pared or canceled annual retooling shutdowns to work around a global semiconductor shortage.

Alliance for Working Together (AWT) is breaking ground on its roughly $3 million Transformation Center, a training facility they’ll use to help train manufacturing workers in Northeast Ohio in the technology they need to know for the next generation of manufacturing jobs.
Car Buzz
Automakers are struggling to keep plants open to meet the demand for new cars as the pandemic continues to be problematic, in addition to the massive semiconductor chip shortage that’s affecting manufacturers. But there’s one industry still raking in the dough: The manufacturers that supply the robots building electric vehicles.

When considering the future of farming, it is important to understand the problems facing the agriculture industry. One of the most pressing issues is something that also haunts manufacturing — the availability of skilled labor. Unfortunately, when very narrow windows of opportunity exist to complete tasks, the challenge quickly becomes exponential, explains Dan Leibfried, director of automation and autonomy at Deere.

In the eVTOL air taxi world, eHang is an outlier. Where most operations are painstakingly doing thousands of unmanned flight tests, eHang is merrily flying people around in autonomous mode, including its own CEO and even members of the public. Where others are dotting every i and crossing every t to ensure they can attain commercial certification in multiple markets, eHang is going into production before anyone's got certification anywhere.

3D Printing Industry
Carl Zeiss Industrial Metrology, a leading manufacturer of multidimensional metrology devices, has partnered with the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory to advance the characterization of 3D printed parts using artificial intelligence and X-ray CT technology. The joint project, named “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence to Enable Reliable Non-Destructive Characterization of Additively Manufactured Parts Using X-ray CT”, will be funded through the DOE’s Technology Commercialization Fund (TFC).
