There is no doubt that 2020 has been a challenging year for businesses. But, just as many companies have scaled back operations and investments to weather the COVID-19 pandemic, fleets are having the opposite problem. Delivery fleets in particular have scrambled to keep up with the increased demand from online shopping. Government fleets continue to grow as well, spending dollars already earmarked for projects that were greenlighted prior to the downturn. That increased activity combined with a renewed focus on health and the environment has accelerated electric fleet pilots across industries.

Windpower Engineering
The U.S. offshore wind industry is set to take off in the coming years, with more than 5 GW of cutting-edge turbines due to come online by 2025, taking advantage of the country’s high offshore windspeeds. However, in order to make the most of this fantastic opportunity to increase renewable energy’s share of the country’s generation mix, owners must plan for operations and maintenance that is effective at preventing both downtime and underperformance during periods of high wind resource.

Drone Life
Just as cars and trucks do their jobs better when they have highways to travel on, as the number of unmanned aerial vehicles delivering packages or transporting medical tests expands, those drones will need highways in the sky to ensure their safe and efficient transit from Point A to Point B. Detroit-based Airspace Link helps connect private drone operators with state and local governments to establish safe flight corridors, and helps provide drone pilots with the data they need to secure Federal Aviation Administration authorization for their operations.

Texas-based Infinitum Electric has developed a new electric motor design which replaces the traditional laminated stator with one that uses PCBs. Currently, the company is supplying motors into industrial settings, for applications such as HVAC. Now, it is looking to branch out into the automotive sector, following an agreement with a Tier 1 supplier to develop a motor for hybrid applications based on its IEm Series.
Engineering
Jigs and fixtures form a considerable part of the cost and time to production for many manufacturing processes. But what if advanced robotics could reduce or eliminate jigs and fixtures in production? For complex assemblies and large weldments, the technology already exists and promises to reduce unit costs in both high mix low volume, and mass production applications.

Hartford Business
Martin Guay wants to bring Connecticut manufacturing back to its urban roots of the Industrial Revolution, when city dwellers left their apartments each morning to put in work at companies like Hartford-based Royal Typewriter Co. or Pope Manufacturing Co. The idea isn’t just for the sake of economic development, it’s also a way to combat the dire workforce shortages faced by Connecticut manufacturers, as aging baby boomer machinists flock toward retirement without the necessary young talent to replace them.
