Travis Camerio is the President of Camerio Builders Inc., a custom home building company located just outside of Braselton. Camerio is also President of the GAHBA's Gwinnett Chapter.

How long have you been in the industry? I grew up in the industry with my father as a track home builder in Gwinnett County. I have been building homes independently and with partners for the last 20 years. Camerio Builders Inc. has been open since September 2009.

Tell us a little about your company and what you do. Camerio Builders Inc. is primarily a custom home building company. We build to suit your land in many different price ranges. We are Certified Aging in Place Specialists (CAPS) and promote universal design and accessible homes. We also are an approved contractor with the V.A. and participate in modification of homes under the V.A.'s Special Adaptive Housing program for veterans who are 100% disabled.

Tell us an interesting/fun tidbit about your business. Sometimes my guys will lock each other in the portable toilets on a job site – one of the main reasons I never use them.

What has been the biggest accomplishment of your career? Every completed job I have had with the V.A. The achievement of helping a person with a disability gain back their independence and live life a little easier in their own home is more joyful than any award ever earned.

Membership Benefits

This is the first week of the GAHBA's 2018 Membership Drive, so this week's Member Benefit is a summary of all the benefits – the GAHBA's Four Pillars of advocacy, education, networking, and community service.

Advocacy: The GAHBA's Government Affairs Committee regularly meets with local officials to build relationships and educate lawmakers about the needs of builders and how the home building industry benefits the economy. In addition, donations raised for the Builder Political Action Committee (BPAC) help support political candidates and causes that will further advance builder interests in the area.

Education: The GAHBA's Education program helps builders and other professionals stay on the cutting edge of the industry by offering a variety of classes with targeted curriculums and accomplished instructors. Members can also get discounts on purchases at the GAHBA's Industry Bookstore, which houses a variety of valuable resources.

Networking: From councils to regional chapter meetings to social events, networking opportunities within the GAHBA are endless. With more than 1,000 members and counting, the GAHBA is the largest association of building industry professionals in the state. Your membership allows you to make contacts and form strategic partnerships to help promote and grow your business.

Community Service: Members have the opportunity to give back by participating in service projects through HomeAid Atlanta, the designated charity of the GAHBA. HomeAid's mission is to "build new lives" for homeless families and individuals by helping raise donations of services and materials and acting as a liaison between service providers, builders, and volunteers.

We would like to congratulate GAHBA Board Member and Past President Jim Brown of JWB Properties on being named 2019 President of the Home Builders Association of Georgia! Brown was installed last week at a banquet held during HBAG’s Fall Membership Conference in Charleston.

“I’m honored to be named President,” Brown said of his new position. “I look forward to serving and helping HBAG work toward accomplishing our goals for the home building industry over the next year.”

Brown has been building custom homes in metro Atlanta for more than 40 years with his company JWB Properties. Some of the company’s past achievements include collaborating with the United States Department of Energy to build the first passive solar home in the state of Georgia and being selected to build the Southern Living Centennial Olympic House.

Brown was President of the GAHBA in 2014 and continues to serve on the board as a Life Director and active member of the association. Outside of work, he is also an avid cyclist who volunteers for the National MS Society, Camp Twin Lakes “Spin for Kids” and Team in Training.

Vinyl Ban Update: Currently, Forsyth County “prohibits vinyl siding, vinyl soffits, and vinyl porch columns.” During the County Commission’s recent work session, the Commission moved ahead with plans to place a temporary moratorium on the vinyl building materials ban. The moratorium should be voted on at their upcoming October 5 session. The final wording of the moratorium has not been released. GAHBA staff will continue to monitor this situation.

School Impact Fees: During the same County Commission work session, the Commission agreed to send a resolution with Forsyth County’s delegation to the General Assembly to “introduce legislation and/or a constitutional amendment that would allow Boards of Education to collect school impact fees following a referendum.” The County Commission and the Forsyth County Board of Education will be sending similar resolutions to the General Assembly to ask for the ability to collect school impact fees. HBAG has been made aware of this resolution and will continue to monitor the issue.
