John and Thomas Cooper are the father-son team behind Cooper Homes in Loganville. John is a former GAHBA President and currently serves on the Board as a Life Director.

Tell us a little about your company and what you do. Cooper Homes has been in operation for over 36 years, and during this period we have built a reputation of quality and value throughout the metro Atlanta area. Cooper Homes is a member of the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association (GAHBA), and company founder, John Cooper, was honored to be named the 2012 Builder of the Year by this great organization. The GAHBA provides members with access to the latest building trends, industry innovations and continuing education, which keeps Cooper Homes ahead of the competition.

Tell us an interesting/fun tidbit about your business. We are fortunate to be able to work side-by-side as father and son. It's a lot more fun working with family.

What has been the biggest accomplishment of your career? Being able to stay in business throughout the recession of 2008. We attribute that success to our involvement with the GAHBA and the beneficial relationships and contacts we made. In addition, John was proud to be named President of the GAHBA in 2016.

Government Affairs

Forsyth: The Forsyth County Commission recently banned “vinyl exterior materials of any kind” from residential construction. GAHBA members and staff have worked with the Forsyth County Commission and the County Planning Department on this matter. The Commission will be placing a moratorium on enforcement of the ban at their next meeting on September 11. Additionally, the Planning Department has advised staff that the ban is limited to only vinyl siding, vinyl soffits, and vinyl porch columns. The GAHBA will continue to monitor this matter as it progresses.

Atlanta’s Open Checkbook: During a recent press conference at City Hall, Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms opened Atlanta’s checkbook to everyone. This could be a great tool for builders. As an example, in 2017, the city paid Trees Atlanta almost $550,000. Click here for more information and to see where Atlanta is spending your money.

Softwood Lumber Trade Agreement: At last month’s Board of Directors meeting, the GAHBA discussed how to take action on lumber prices. One way is to tell your U.S. Senators to sign onto a letter urging the Administration to reach a lumber trade solution with Canada. Click here to take action now!

Sandy Springs: Sandy Springs has partnered with Trees Atlanta to provide residents with up to three free shade trees. Residents will be responsible for maintaining the new trees. Trees must be planted within 35 feet of the right-of-way and must be planted between October and March. Funding for the program will come from the City’s Tree Fund.
