Construction Contracts and Law

Feb. 17, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Protect your business against legal problems with well-written contracts!

Many construction or remodeling companies are too small to hire full-time legal staff so it's important to understand basic contract law. This class provides a step-by-step explanation of how contracts sustain positive customer and supplier relations, provide for resolution of disputes, and minimize the risk of litigation. Participants will learn about mandatory and optional provisions, warranties, and arbitration procedures. Special emphasis is given to troubleshooting contracts for unfavorable positions.  Attendees of this course will be able to identify:
•    Basic elements of a contract
•    Benefits and advantages of written contracts
•    Risks of building on the customer’s lot
•    Risks associated with modifying an existing structure on the customer’s lot
•    Rights and responsibilities of Contractor and Owner during construction
•    Differences between remodeling and other residential construction contracts
•    Requirements of a subcontractor agreement

Christine Fortenberry will facilitate this session.  She is a graduate of Georgia Tech, and has been building, developing and remodeling for over 38 years.  She is a guest lecturer for the Georgia Tech School of Architecture and other organizations on the subjects of Universal Design and Aging-in-Place and is an instructor for NAHB.  She has experienced moving from building to remodeling and will raise your awareness of the tasks and challenges that lie ahead to tilt the odds of success in your favor.
