The use of Electronic Logging Devices will be mandatory for the Canadian transportation industry starting June 2020. While these devices are considered by many to be a helpful tool to log driver hours, a recent story featured in the CDL Life Magazine warns users of possible cybersecurity concerns.

A recall notice has been issued for Valor H5 series fireplaces due to a laceration hazard. The use of the fireplaces over time may cause the pilot burner component to degrade causing a delay in the main burner ignition. Consumers should stop using the affected fireplaces and contact the dealer to repair the fireplace burner. 

At a recent meeting of the Multi-Industry Association Committee on Transportation and Dangerous Goods, the topic of Transport Canada’s Transportation of Dangerous Goods virtual inspections was discussed.  If you have experienced one of these TDG "virtual audits", please contact the CPA.

Environment and Climate Change Canada delivered a new version of the Technical Guide for Environmental Emergency Regulatory Requirements on July 15, 2020. The deadline to provide changes to the document is before August 12, 2020.

New service standards that came into effect April 1, 2020 have been updated and apply to service requests received by Measurement Canada on or after that date. For more information, visit the Measurement Canada web page.

The CRA is extending the payment due date for current year individual, corporate, and trust income tax returns, including instalment payments, from September 1, 2020, to September 30, 2020.

Through the Essential Services Contingency Reserve Registration, eligible essential service businesses or organizations may apply to receive personal protective equipment (PPE), non-medical masks and disinfection products to address urgent, short-term (45 days) needs.

The B.C. government has extended the state of emergency through the end of the day on August 18, 2020. Workers and employers who need to extend temporary layoffs beyond the Aug. 30, 2020 expiry date are reminded to apply for a variance by August 25, 2020.

Inspections deferred to COVID-19 must now resume, with any backlogged inspections cleared by November 30. The CPA has stated that this timeline is inadequate for larger propane companies, with the TSSA responding that extensions will be considered where warranted.

The Ontario government is encouraging Ontarians to download the new COVID Alert app on their smart phone from the Apple and Google Play app stores. This app, which is available beginning today, lets users know if they may have been exposed to the virus. Windsor-Essex County Health Unit remains in Stage 2 until the data indicates they can safely move to Stage 3. 

The Quebec government is now allowing private-sector employers whose employees were working at home to have up to a maximum of 25% of their staff return to work. It should be noted that the rate is a maximum, not an objective to be attained. Gatherings in public locations have increased to 250 (read more on gathering limitations across Canada here). Free Access to CSA Standards

The CSA Group has launched an online platform that allows registered users free access to Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) safety standards published by CSA Group referenced in federal TDG regulations. Users can now log into Communities of Interest and register to find the TDG View Access site here.
