The CPA is participating with the World LPG Association and regional, national and international propane industries in publicizing cohesive messaging on propane during the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) negotiations, held in Glasgow from October 31 - November 12.

The Conference Board of Canada has released two new studies that provide insight into the supply chain for propane as well as updated market information on the propane industry. Both studies were cost-shared by the CPA, the Canada Energy Regulator, Natural Resources Canada, and Transport Canada – this is the first time research on the propane industry has been cost-shared co-funded, a testament to the gaining importance of the industry in Canada.

Prime Minister Trudeau’s new cabinet was sworn in on October 26. On November 22, a Speech from the Throne will highlight the opening of Parliament. In a letter sent to the Prime Minister on October 4, CPA Board Chair Nancy Borden reaffirmed the propane industry’s commitment to working with the federal government.

The B.C. government announced on October 25 a more ambitious climate plan to deliver on its previous climate commitments. The roadmap accelerates previous emissions measures and introduces new ideas to help B.C. achieve the Paris emissions reduction targets for 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050.

On October 15, the Manitoba government announced $1 million in grants from the Conservation and Climate Fund to nine organizations for green projects throughout the province. The government says these projects support its ongoing commitment to green investments that align with the Made-in-Manitoba Climate and Green Plan.

The CPA met with Benjamin Levitt, stakeholder relations director and Hannah Anderson, policy director from the Red Tape Reduction Ministry, on October 14. The CPA outlined key red tape and business burdens that Ontario’s propane providers would like to see removed or reduced.

The Ontario Energy Association annual conference on Sept. 27 allowed participants and speakers to share industry and political insight into the factors that may influence the next provincial election in June 2022.

The Canadian government recently invoked a 1977 treaty on pipelines between Canada and the U.S. to stop Michigan’s attempt to shut down Enbridge’s Line 5. Enbridge stated that the dispute is “directly and significantly” impacting Canada-U.S. relations.
