Recently, Canada’s Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Catherine McKenna joined with provincial and municipal officials in the Region of Peel to announce the replacement of existing specialized accessible transit buses with 69 new propane-powered buses. The specialized 8-metre propane buses will replace the current fleet as those buses reach the end of their service.
In making the announcement, Minister Mckenna noted the importance of building, cleaner and more inclusive communities and the role propane can play: “These investments will help make sure there's accessible public transit, powered by lower-emissions propane, for residents across Peel Region, throughout Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon.”
The funding announcement was part of an overall investment of almost $9 million in two projects by the federal government, the Ontario government and the Region of Peel.
The federal contribution was made through Investing in Canada Plan, in which the government has targeted over $180 billion over 12 years in public transit projects, green infrastructure, social infrastructure, trade and transportation routes, and Canada's rural and northern communities.
