NEW – ON: CPA opposes Toronto council motion to phase out gas-fired plants

On February 2, 2021, Toronto city council considered Motion (MM28.21) from councillors McKelvie and Layton recommending that council request the Ontario government develop and implement a plan to phase out all gas-fired generation as soon as possible to ensure Toronto can achive its climate action goals. The motion was deferred for further debate on March 10, 2021.

In this motion, councillors joined 13 other Ontario municipal governments across the province requesting the government phase-out gas-fired electricity generation province-wide.

The CPA believes it necessary to oppose this motion considering that it could possibly mean, in the long term, the elimination of propane and will submit arguments against the motion in writing to both city council and responsible Ontario government representatives. This will support the submission from the President of Atura Power, Chris Fralick, in his February 1, 2021 letter to council.

The CPA has learned that similar considerations by the Québec government could lead to the proposed phase out of other fuels like propane, so the CPA and the industry should be on record in opposition.
