Following the leadership vote on October 7, Danielle Smith was elected as the new UCP leader and sworn in as the Alberta premier on November 10, 2022. The provincial election is scheduled for May 29, 2023.

The CPA congratulated the new premier, encouraging the UCP to work with the CPA and its members on including propane in policy and regulatory decisions, offering energy affordability assistance for propane users (i.e., the Government of Alberta’s Natural Gas Rebate program), and encouraging end-use switching. During the leadership campaign, Premier Smith frequently focused on the importance of rural priorities, something the CPA will emphasize during government engagement and advocacy.

The UCP stated that there was a significant Cabinet shuffle across ministries; the CPA will engage with the new minister, staffers, and key decision-makers and provide opportunities for members to participate when available.

The provincial election is scheduled for May 29, 2023. The CPA expects to form a Lobby Day for Alberta members in Q3 2023, details with be discussed at future Alberta Committee meetings.
