In July 2021, the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Group in collaboration with the Ontario Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD), announced complimentary e-learning to Ontario residents to reduce the burden of skilled trades compliance requirements and assist with economic recovery.

This training will:

  • Enable skilled trades to keep pace with changes to technical standards and get back to work safely.
  • Help students and learners by providing access to overview courses that may be incorporated into community college programs including electrical, gas, medical gas and medical device reprocessing.

Particularly relevant to the propane sector are two courses on recent updates to CSA B149 codes.

The CSA Code B149 series applies to gas fitters, gas technicians, pipefitters, plumbers and apprentices providing guidance on the handling and storage of natural gas and propane and safe and effective installation of related appliances and equipment.

These CSA B149 Code course updates are:

  1. CSA B149.1.20 and CSA B149.2.20 OVERVIEW – helps learners understand and apply key changes in these codes.
  2. CSA B149.3.20 OVERVIEW – provides insight into the new additions, changes or deletions in the new standard to allow participants to quickly determine benefits of the new standard for their organization.

This training offered is for information updates as outlined above only.

The CPA identified the need for increased skills training for gas fitters in the propane industry with the former Minister of Government and Consumer Services, The Honourable Lisa Thompson, in June 2020 during consultations on measures required for swift post pandemic economic recovery.

The courses are one-hour online offerings available for registration until March 30, 2022 and accessible up to 90 days after registration. Courses may be ordered in English and French though these links:
