Opportunities for Propane with Municipal Fleets

The Green Municipal Fund (GMF) is a key program of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) that provides partial funding for municipalities to design and implement successful projects and foster sustainability across Canada. This includes funding for transportation capital projects related to sustainability and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

This presents an excellent opportunity for the propane industry to promote propane to reduce GHG emissions in municipal fleets. Projects under the program must demonstrate the potential to reduce life-cycle GHG emissions by at least 20% for a municipal fleet or a portion of a municipal fleet.

The CPA is finalizing a turn-key proposal to approach municipalities and promote switching fleets to propane to leverage the FCM Green Municipal Fund. Early indicators suggest that municipal units are interested in applying for funding for capital projects, including Cape Breton Regional Municipality, NS and the Town of Dieppe, NB. The CPA will also contact other municipal public officials to assess their interest.

The turn-key proposal would be delivered by third-party partners across Canada. Their role would include promoting the Green Municipal Fund and assisting municipalities in developing their projects to switch their fleets to propane.

The CPA will present the proposal to members and finalize partnerships to reach municipalities.
