TRENTON - New Jersey's Senate president has a new plan to raise the gasoline tax to fund transportation projects.

Democrat Steve Sweeney met with Republican Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday.

Christie spokesman Brian Murray and Sweeney spokesman Richard McGrath say a proposal was provided and is under review. But no one is saying what tax cuts would accompany the additional 23-cent-a-gallon increase in the gas tax.

A ballot measure to increase retail sales tax by a half percent to raise funds for transportation improvements in Placer County was placed on the Nov. 8, 2016, presidential general election ballot today by the county board of supervisors.

The proposed measure, if approved by two-thirds of county voters, would be in effect for 30 years and would raise about $1.6 billion to fund highway projects, public transit expansion, local street maintenance and improvements and other projects in both suburban and rural areas of the county.

The May reading shows the domestic intermodal sector is still experiencing somewhat difficult competitive conditions, but that the overall situation remains mildly favorable from an intermodal standpoint.

Larry Gross, partner at FTR and principal author of Intermodal Update, said, "May’s ICI was adversely affected by relatively weak intermodal volumes and downward rate pressure. However, while intermodal is not currently experiencing the robust growth to which we have been accustomed, the fundamentals still look solid, with truck capacity expected to tighten as we move into 2017 due to the approaching federal electronic logging device mandate. Fuel prices are also moving up, which provides some tailwind for intermodal."
