New York — United States Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx says if the nation's troubled transportation system, which is currently "teetering on the edge of insolvency," isn't fixed quickly, 700,000 people could soon be out of work. By now, you’re well aware of President Obama’s announcement that he will direct the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation to set the next — i.e., the post-2018 — round of medium- and heavy-truck fuel economy and emissions standards. The first round of standards was finalized in September 2011, and trucks meeting those standards are just now going into production. Nordic Cold Storage, which opened the first phase of its state-of-the-art storage and blast facility in Pooler last year, announced Tuesday the beginning of Phase Two, which will double capacity and add 135 new jobs to the 135 now in place. Work is already under way, with completion expected in the first quarter of 2015, said Ross Maple, director of business strategy for Atlanta-based Nordic, the second largest cold-storage operator in the Southeast and the eighth largest in North America.

If there was an unspoken theme to this year's Mid-America Trucking Show, it was probably the focus on integrated drivetrains. And Martin Daum, president and CEO of Daimler Trucks North America, had some interesting things to say about automated transmissions in general. The seemingly popular SmartAdvantage integrated powertrain announced last year by Cummins and Eaton joins an ISX15 engine with the Fuller Advantage automated 10-speed transmission, and now there's a variant in Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks that mates that gearbox with the Paccar MX-13 engine. Peterbilt calls it the Apex, offering it in the aerodynamic Model 579 tractor, while Kenworth seems not to have coined a name.

The board of directors for trucking and logistics provider USA Truck has unanimously voted to terminate the company's stockholders' rights plan, effective April 11. The plan, also know as a "poison pill," was adopted in November 2012 by the Arkansas-based company’s board to ward off any unsolicited takeover attempts as the company began implementing a turnaround program following financial problems and a drop in its stock price.

Daimler has updated its US market Mercedes/Freightliner Sprinter to better compete in the commercial van segment. The Detroit Free Press said the third-generation 2014 Sprinter is shipped from Germany in kit form for assembly at the Freightliner facility in Charleston, South Carolina. Bernhard Glaser, managing director of commercial vans for Mercedes-Benz USA, said: "A major change is happening. Core competitors are updating their fleets to Euro-style vans." The new Sprinter, with additional features and styling updates, would probably achieve record sales in 2014, according to Glaser.
