Member News
As a community of school business management professionals across Florida, we are dedicated to networking, sharing knowledge, and finding solutions in the ever-evolving world of education. We are continually grateful to those who contribute to the success of our association. In this new column, we’ll spotlight FASBO members to help strengthen connections within our community.
This month's member spotlight is Cindy Stevens, our FASBO Director At Large.
![]() Q: What is your name, school district, and position? If retired, where did you last work?
A: Cindy Stevens, Osceola County School District, Accounts Payable Supervisor
Q: What drew you to this role and how did you get started in this field?
A: I started my career at Osceola County Schools almost 35 years ago as a High School Bookkeeper and held that position for 10 years. School Bookkeepers work very closely with the District Accounts Payable Department, and I loved the Accounts Payable side. I transferred to the district office and worked in Revenue for a couple of years. Then, the Accounts Payable Supervisor retired, and I stepped into the position. Best decision ever — Love it...
Q: How long have you been a member of FASBO?
A: I've been a member of FASBO for about 13 years.
Q: Why did you join the organization?
A: I joined the organization to gain more knowledge of school finance in general. FASBO offers great educational programs, and having a network of colleagues in the same field is awesome to build a relationship, to have someone you can reach out to and brainstorm together. Being able to stay current on new practices and new technology has been very beneficial. Each year at our annual conference, vendors come and show us new products and ideas that are so valuable, as technology is changing so quickly.
Q: Who/what inspires you?
A: This is going to sound strange, but I love problem-solving. When you are faced with something that needs a resolution, I love to jump in and determine how it happened, what we can do to fix it, and how we can prevent it from happening again. I also enjoy growing our department. I have been instrumental in developing our Accounts Payable Credit Card program for our district, which has been a HUGE success, while at the same time fun and motivating — we have turned our AP Department into a revenue-producing department.
Q: How do you define success?
A: I define success as, at the end of the day, you can look back and you see the difference you made during that time. Some days are more successful than others, some more productive, some days we are firefighters — putting out fires all day, but the fact that you showed up, you did your best, and you are satisfied with your performance, to me — that is success.
Q: Favorite place you’ve traveled?
A: I love to travel to the Mountains. North Georgia or North Carolina, especially in the fall of the year, is my favorite place to visit. Everyone decorates, and the air is so fresh and clean. I love to rent a cabin by a creek with a fire pit outside and a fireplace inside — My Happy Place!
Q: Fun fact that people probably don’t know about you?
A: I am a product of Osceola County Schools. I attended all 12 years of school here. Growing up, my Dad was a freshwater commercial fisherman — I grew up in the family business, and it would only make sense, my first "real job" I worked for a boat manufacturer - Regal Boats in Orlando for 7 ½ years —- and I loved that job! I left there to come work for the Osceola School District.
We would like to thank Cindy for sharing her career and life wisdom with us! If you would like to be in one of our upcoming member spotlights, or would like to nominate another member, please email Stephanie Burkhardt at stephanie.burkhardt@marion.k12.fl.us.
