As a community of school business management professionals across Florida, we are dedicated to networking, sharing knowledge, and finding solutions in the ever-evolving world of education. We are continually grateful to those who contribute to the success of our association. In this new column, we’ll spotlight FASBO members to help strengthen connections within our community. This month's member spotlight is Franca Courchene, our FASBO President.
Q: What is your name, school district, and position? A: Franca Courchene, Manager, Auditing in Pinellas County Schools Q: What drew you to this role and how did you get started in this field? A: I got started in auditing quite by accident. I was hired in the Auditing & Property Records department at Pinellas County Schools as a property control clerk 12 years ago. Fortunately, my director at the time gave me the opportunity to train and work as a staff auditor—and the rest is history. Although I had no background in auditing initially, I quickly discovered a true passion for it. What I love most about auditing is that it’s like solving a puzzle. Each audit involves analyzing complex information, identifying root causes, and developing thoughtful, practical recommendations. But beyond that, it’s the ability to make a real, positive impact on the organization that drives me. I enjoy the variety, the critical thinking, and the big-picture perspective auditing provides. It’s rewarding to know that our work strengthens internal controls and contributes to the ethical and effective use of public resources. Q: Why did you join the organization? A: I came to appreciate the access to high-quality professional development they offered. Joining FASBO is a great way to stay informed and connected with school business operations statewide. The annual conferences have been instrumental in helping me stay current and grow in my role. I have since earned the Florida School Business Officer Certification offered by FASBO that furthered my skills in leadership. But even more valuable to me has been the strong statewide network of colleagues I’ve built through my involvement. I have built relationships with fellow school official peers that provide support, camaraderie, and lasting friendship that I know will last long beyond my professional career. Q: What career advice do you live by? Who gave it to you? OR Who is someone who’s made a big impact on your life? Why? A: I’ve been fortunate throughout my career to work with leaders who weren’t just supervisors—they were true supporters and mentors. I can be hard on myself when I don’t have all the answers or when I’m still figuring things out. One piece of advice that really stuck with me was, “You don’t have to know everything—just be willing to learn.” That simple message changed how I approach challenges. I’ve come to realize that giving your best, staying open to growth, and viewing every setback as a lesson is what strengthens not just your skills, but your entire career. Q: How do you define success? A: I define success as making a meaningful impact through consistent, honest work. It’s not about titles or recognition but about knowing that what I do makes things better for others—whether it’s supporting a team, improving a process, or helping someone succeed. If I can end the day knowing I showed up, gave my best, and left things a little better than I found them, that’s success to me. Q: Favorite place you’ve traveled? A: That’s a tough one. I have been so fortunate in my life to have traveled to so many places. I would have to say it was Sydney, Australia. I came back with alarming jet lag, a serious appreciation for ‘flat whites’ and a fear of large insects.

Continuing Education
FASBO is now accepting nominations for the FASBO Outstanding Business Official Award. This prestigious honor recognizes a FASBO member who demonstrates exceptional professionalism, leadership, and innovation in the field of school business management.
The award recipient will be honored at the FASBO Annual Conference in November and will also receive regional recognition at the Southeastern Association of School Business Officials (SASBO) Annual Conference in March 2026.
We encourage members to nominate deserving colleagues who exemplify excellence in our profession.

Industry News & Trends
In an article dated July 7th, the governor announced 2024-2025 school grades and the trend of improvement continues from 2023-2024.
Overview of 2025 School Grades:
Superintendents were reminded by the new Florida Education Commissoner Anastasios Kamoutsas that teachers and parents have rights and those rights need to be addressed. Letters will be issued to both parties to provide an outline of those rights and that schools should uphold the authority of these bills. Kamoutsas says that “School principals are reminded that these are not optional practices. They are requirements under the law, designed to uphold the authority of teachers in the classroom and to ensure a respectful, orderly learning environment for student academic achievement. Failure to comply with these provisions is a violation of Florida law.”
