Member News

As a community of school business management professionals across Florida, we are dedicated to networking, sharing knowledge, and finding solutions in the ever-evolving world of education. We are continually grateful to those who contribute to the success of our association. In this new column, we’ll spotlight FASBO members to help strengthen connections within our community.

This month's member spotlight is Ryan Smith, our Director of Accounting Management.

Q: What is your name, school district, and position?

A:  Ryan A. Smith, Broward County Public Schools, Director/Officer I, Business Support Center.

Q: What drew you to this role, and how did you get started in this field?

A:  I chose to work for Broward County Public Schools because I wanted to contribute to an organization that directly impacts my own family and community. My career began in the private sector, where I was responsible for the performance of an entire business unit. Early on, I realized that managerial accounting was essential to that success. Mastering budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis, and contingency planning strengthened my ability to lead effectively. As my career progressed, I expanded my expertise to include financial accounting, rounding out a solid foundation in financial leadership.

Q: How long have you been a member of FASBO?

A: I have been a member of FASBO since 2021.

Q: Why did you join the organization?

A: Service has always been a core value for me. Throughout my career, I’ve remained actively involved in professional associations as well as nonprofit advisory and fiduciary boards. When I transitioned into the K–12 education sector, I sought out a professional community where I could continue making a meaningful impact. FASBO stood out for its breadth, mission, and collaborative network. I joined the Board in November 2021 as the Director of Accounting Management and continue to enjoy supporting its important work.

Q: What career advice do you live by? Who gave it to you?

A: One of the best pieces of advice I ever received came from a mentor who told me, “One of the most impactful tools we have as leaders is the ability to ask the right question, to the right person, at the right time.” That guidance has helped me navigate countless challenges, often revealing the insight needed to respond thoughtfully—or sometimes, to listen in silence. I also embrace Jack Welch’s philosophy that we don’t always achieve work-life balance, but we can strive for work-life choice. That idea, combined with J.E. McCulloch’s quote, “No other success can compensate for failure in the home,” continues to guide how I approach leadership and family life.

Q: How do you define success?

A: I define professional success as the ability to lead organizations toward financial health while helping them achieve their broader mission. That means developing sustainable budgets, aligning resources with strategic goals, and strengthening processes so the organization can thrive well beyond my time there. It also includes mentoring and developing the next generation of leaders. At the same time, I believe personal success means staying grounded, being present for my family, and ensuring that professional achievements enhance—not compete with—what matters most at home.

Q: Favorite place you’ve traveled?

A: It’s a tie between the Pacific side of Costa Rica and central Italy—two completely different experiences, both unforgettable. Costa Rica offered stunning beaches, diverse wildlife, and a favorable currency exchange. In contrast, Italy was rich with history, breathtaking art, and delicious cuisine. Both destinations are definitely on my list to visit again!

We would like to thank Ryan for sharing his career life and wisdom with us! If you would like to be in one of our upcoming member spotlights, or would like to nominate another member, please email Stephanie Burkhardt at stephanie.burkhardt@marion.k12.fl.us.
