Conference News

The Directors of FSFOA and FASBO have come together to plan a joint conference this year. It will be an opportunity to learn from experts and build relationships with school finance and business staff throughout the state. You’ll also have time to visit with our partners. They will display the latest and greatest products and services that could potentially save time and money. We are excited to work together to provide great learning opportunities for all conference attendees in November during this joint conference with FASBO/FSFOA. We are currently working on the agenda to create great learning opportunities for all attendees.

The conference will be held November 11 – 15, 2019 at the DoubleTree by Hilton at the entrance to Universal Orlando. The room rates start at $129 per night. Parking is discounted to $5 per day. Reservations should be made by October 22, 2019 using the following link Hotel Registration

Our theme for this conference is “Power of Connection”. This is in recognition of our joint conference as well as the Universal Studios Marvel Comics superheroes that help those in need. It also pays tribute to the superheroes you are everyday in your district. Just like the Marvel superheroes, school finance and business officials use our tools and skills to help those around us. The roles we play in our districts are so intertwined and our connections are vital to everyday successes in our districts. Each year we seem to face new and sometimes frightening challenges. To conquer these challenges, we need each other and our “Power of Connection”.

Conference registration for members of FSFOA or FASBO is $200. Daily passes for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are also available for $100 per day.  All registrations must be completed online; just look for the gray Register Now button on the lower left side of the screen.  We would like to have all the registrations completed by October 22, 2019 for planning purposes.  Additional fees will be assessed after that date.

The conference structure will be a little different as we merge the best of each association. On Tuesday morning there will be sessions on Accounting, Auditing and Internal Controls as well as Accounts Payable and Payroll Certification sessions. Then in the afternoon, you can meet with your peers at roundtables in the areas of Operations/Maintenance, Energy and Purchasing/Contract/ Warehousing/Property Records or attend special interest breakout sessions. In the evening, there will be a Welcome Reception in the Courtyard with drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

The conference will officially begin Wednesday morning and lunch will be provided in the EXPO hall. The afternoon will be filled with special interest breakout sessions. Our conference banquet will be held on Wednesday evening this November. This night will be fun, filled with games and interaction with our business partners as well as each other. There will be plenty of food and cocktails to enjoy your evening.

On Thursday, DOE will provide information on new legislation and will cover important subjects that pertain to our respective school districts. Friday morning, after hearing an update from FRS and an economic update, Andrea Messina from the Florida School Board Association will fill us in on additional legislative updates.

Before or during the conference you will be able to download the conference app which will provide the agenda, your customizable schedule and the most up-to-date information about the conference, including speaker bios, maps and sponsor listings. For those of you who prefer paper, a printable version of the agenda will be available for you to print from your office. All the conference presentations will also be available online after the conference.

Please continue to watch FASBO.org and FSFOA.org for updated agendas. This will be a conference you will not want to miss. So put on that cape, pack your superpowers and fly over to Orlando in November. We look forward to connecting with you!

Continuing Education

School business is a very complex and demanding profession requiring a special set of knowledge, skills, and abilities.  It is incumbent upon us to ensure that those who follow us have the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities. To that end, the Board of Directors of the Florida Association of School Business Officials (FASBO) has embarked on the creation of a Professional Certification Program.

Although Florida is the fourth largest state in the nation, it is one of nineteen states with no certification or credentialing requirements. The Florida School Finance Council has recognized this emerging issue.  It is the feeling of the Council that certification or credentialing will benefit individual school districts and the statewide education system as it will address recruitment and retention issues, cultivate talent internally, encourage best practices, and build a cadre of professional school business leaders and staff members. As technology advances, an increased need for training at the clerical and paraprofessional is also becoming more apparent.

Recognizing the importance of attaining professionalism for school business officials, not only with regard to acquired knowledge and experience, but also in terms of the recognition and respect of peers and other professionals, FASBO’s Board of Directors established its Professional Certification Program in 2009.

The Program offers both acknowledgment and recognition for professionals at all levels of school business management. Certification is a way of recognizing those individuals with the background, training, and on-the-job experience to meet recognized standards of professional competence.
