Whether a physician or other medical provider is sufficiently qualified to testify as an expert is a multifaceted issue. Each state has its own requirements in determining whether a witness qualifies as an expert. Some jurisdictions require potential medical experts to engage in “active clinical practice” before rendering any opinions. An expert medical witness might be the difference between winning and losing your malpractice claim. Choosing the right expert witness is vital for increasing your chances of compensation. Expert witnesses must meet certain standards to be accepted by the court as reliable witnesses. Acceding to a storm of protest, the University of Florida abandoned efforts on Friday to keep three political science professors from testifying in a voting-rights lawsuit against the administration of Gov. Ron DeSantis. Hours later, however, the professors sued university officials in federal court, claiming their First Amendment rights had been violated. They asked the court to permanently bar the university from limiting their outside work on matters opposing the state’s interests. A look at what you need when selecting an expert witness.
