The Forensic Expert Witness

FEWA News

The 2021 FEWA National Conference was a huge success among FEWA members and the expert witness community. Experts gained valuable insight on driving their expert witness practice, presenting relevant and professional testimony, and had the opportunity to network with other members and guests of the FEWA community, both in-person and livestream.

Thank you to our speakers, sponsors, and FEWA National Conference Planning Committee who contributed their valuable time, knowledge, and support to make this year’s conference a success!

Digital devices are in our pockets, we use them in every facet of our lives. They know us on an intimate level – what interests us, what we buy, what we are thinking about, our health, our habits, our relationships, where we go – it is all there. What can they testify to in court? How can we look at them as an expert witness?

After my malpractice initiation, I was a bit jaded about the legal system. I felt I had been shortchanged by a medical education that didn't address malpractice at all, and that all lawyers were, shall we say, not the best that the earth had to offer. A year or two later, I received a cold call from a female attorney in Baltimore. She asked me whether I might be willing to be an expert witness in an emergency medicine (EM) case.

Remote working has become universal during the pandemic. The office is replaced by a designated area somewhere at home. The journey to the office is replaced by the telecommute. The standard 9-to-5 day is replaced by flexible hours. While these operational changes have given business continuity, the impact on individuals working from home (WFH) has not always been positive.

Courts are now reopening across the country and the social distancing requirements that upended traditional civil litigation practices for the past year are gradually being eliminated. The “old normal” appears to be just around the corner. No more need to polish those hard-earned virtual advocacy skills, right? Yes and no.
