Industry News

Serving as an expert witness is akin to running your own small consulting business. You provide unique expertise on short-term projects without being employed full-time by an attorney or firm. For many experts, this flexibility to contribute to legal cases is a welcome professional outlet apart from their primary job.

If you have ever watched televised trials, you may have noticed the use of expert witnesses. In many cases, this occurs in civil cases, such as those involving a personal injury. However, expert witnesses are also very common in criminal matters. In fact, these experts can provide a lot of useful testimony to controvert the prosecution's take on the facts. Learn more about how an expert witness can be a benefit to your criminal defense efforts.

Nursing can introduce professionals to many different career paths and industries, including law. The American Association of Nurse Attorneys (TANAA) defines nurse attorneys as professionals “licensed to practice both nursing and law.” Nurse attorneys take on the important role of defending nurses and other healthcare professionals in malpractice cases, but they also fulfill many other responsibilities.

In the aftermath of the guilty verdict in the trial of Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin for the murder of George Floyd, a consistent element of many criminal trials came into sharp focus: the role of medical expert witnesses, and the influence they wield in the courtroom, particularly as it relates to determining the cause of death.

Attorneys and experienced witnesses will often ask themselves the question, “Do I need an image to explain this?” But the question really should be, “How can I work an image into this explanation?” The image will often help, even when it isn’t strictly or logically necessary.
