Dorothy Haraminac is a new member of FEWA's Houston Chapter. Ten years ago, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) published a groundbreaking study on the use of forensics in criminal trials. The study found that, in the “pattern matching” fields of forensics in particular, expert witnesses had been vastly overstating the significance and certainty of their analyses. The character of the professions, given so much online work activity, is undergoing a massive shift. More workers are leaving their companies and organizations to consult, become independent contractors, or start a small business of their own, and more companies are relying on contractors and freelancers to handle their work. ![]()

Most US states currently follow the standard set forth in Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals when it comes to qualifying expert witnesses. Others, however, adhere to the older Frye standard, use a combination of Daubert and Frye, or use their own standard.
