Certification from the Forensic Expert Witness Association
By Joseph Quilici, PE, SE, CFLC – FEWA National Board

A Sign of Credibility

Forensic Expert Witness Association (FEWA) members that hold the Certified Forensic Litigation Consultant (CFLC) or Master Certified Forensic Litigation Consultant (MCFLC) signify with their credentials that they have a passion & commitment to strive for improvement in forensic consulting.

One Has to Earn It
The CFLC is granted exclusively to FEWA Professional and Professional Consulting members who have met the eligibility criteria established, requiring significant participation in FEWA activities and completing education courses in forensic analysis, litigation consulting, and expert witness. FEWA activities qualify for Continuing Education Units (CEU), and once members have accumulated qualifying participation and coursework CEUs, they can apply to take the 60-question credentialing examination.

Core Values Emphasized
The CFLC and MCFLC training focus on core topics necessary for effective expert witnesses. Monthly programs, webinars, and annual conferences organized by the leaders of FEWA regions and presented by top attorneys, judges, and other legal professionals around the country provide training in engagement agreements and getting hired, organization and discovery, office management, timekeeping, invoicing, report writing, deposition testimony, trial exhibits, and testimony, connecting with fact finders and juries, conflicts & ethics, getting paid, etc.

Remarkable Results
FEWA’s 2022 National Vice President, Susan Maccoy, is an expert witness in cosmetology, CFLC, and an MCFLC. Susan has a robust online presence and a very successful practice. She lists her CFLC & MCFLC credentials on her marketing materials & letterhead and displays the MCFLC emblem on her expert reports, opinions, and rebuttals. Susan reports that she most often gets questioned about her credentials by the opposition during deposition and puts the questioning to rest with a brief explanation of the certification process.

Susan has found that her CFLC & MCFLC certifications have shifted her relationships with law teams to an equal status. She has been retained to consult on new aspects of her cases, such as case theory development & case bulletproofing, alternative analytical case theories, discovery strategies, development of deposition questions for attorney clients, and pre-deposition coaching for attorney clients regarding industrial jargon, techno-speak & opposing expert “smoke & mirrors” techniques.
