Shaping the Future: Electrical Association Engages with YouthBuild Emerging Constructors Program

This spring, Michelle Dreier from the Electrical Association engaged and spoke with YouthBuild Emerging Constructors (YBEC) in North/Near North Minneapolis. Youthbuild-EC is inspiring group of young adults, participating in a workforce initiative led by EDEN Resources and the Man Up Club. The program is designed to support BIPOC youth ages 18–24 through hands-on construction training, mentorship, and career exposure in the skilled trades.

Michelle’s visit brought an energizing perspective to the YBEC classroom, where she shared valuable insights into career opportunities in the electrical field. Her presentation covered key industry pathways, the role of safety and continued skill-building, and how union and non-union apprenticeships can open doors for motivated young professionals. She also highlighted the importance of diversity and youth engagement in shaping the industry’s future.

A highlight of the day was a hands-on group activity where participants worked together to build a basic LED-powered electrical circuit. Roughly one-third of the students successfully completed the challenge with ease; demonstrating focus, creativity, teamwork, and a budding interest in the electrical trade.

Michelle’s connection with students emphasized the impact of early career exposure and strong industry partnerships. Her time with the YBEC program is a great example of how partnership among industry, associations, and community-based organizations are fundamental in shaping the emergent worker.
