New legislation initiated by Figen Murray OBE, whose son Martyn Hett was one of the 22 people killed in the 2017 Manchester Arena terrorist attack, is currently being progressed by the UK government, and is set to transform the way the events industry thinks about safety and security.

The Protect Duty legislation, also known as Martyn’s Law, will formalise the responsibilities and actions that venues and those organising events in the UK must take to mitigate the risk of a terrorist attack.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your work on The Events Industry Council's Meeting and Event Redesign workstream.

I have been in the global events arena for more than 30 years. My consulting practice, Warwick Strategic Planning, is focused on event strategic planning and risk management.

Tell us about yourself and your experience on EIC’s APEX Commission

My interest in safety and security in the meetings and events industry came about because of two main things — growing up in hurricane country and being a lawyer. I grew up on the coast of Georgia with a healthy respect for inclement weather. I will never forget missing the first day of seventh grade because of Hurricane David — I was always a school geek, and I was upset to miss the first day.
