“Positive?  Seriously? Didn’t he have it already? AND didn’t he confirm he got vaccinated?”

We had just gone wheels down in Costa Rica, and the first text arrived as we landed. Thankfully, we were three days ahead of our main arrivals. Within three hours, we would get our second notification. Another vaccinated attendee. Another positive test result before departure. Delta. Both had almost no symptoms, but had, out of an abundance of caution, gotten a rapid test a few days prior to departure.

Well, here we are on the declining slope of the 2020 pandemic that brought the Hospitality, MICE and Tourism industries to their knees. The old and often-quoted proverb, “Necessity is the Mother of Invention,” rings very true for today’s job seekers, as many new positions have been created that never existed, or existed in a very limited capacity, prior to the 2020 worldwide crisis. Indeed, the projected 500,000 lost jobs in 2020 in the hotel industry alone, indicates an economic sector ripe for reinvention.

“May you live in interesting times.” Indeed, we have been doing just that, as the supposed ancient Chinese proverb portends. Business in general and our industry, in particular, are lurching back into action, though many workers still seek a return to full employment that isn’t yet ready for them. If only there were a simple action that, consistently applied, could be the game-changer in both the short term and over the longer arc of an entire career…

What did you want to (or think you’d) be when you grew up?

A chef or a lawyer.

What was your educational field of study (college major or whatever, as applicable), and, if notably different from what you do, your how/why/story?

I graduated from the University of Vermont in 2009 with a degree in Community Development and Applied Economics with a focus in Public Communication. At the time of choosing my major, I wanted to go into policy making, specifically policy surrounding food security, childhood hunger and LGBTQ rights. Like many college kids, I had to get a job to pay my rent and support my extracurricular activities, so I found a job as a banquet setup team member at a nearby resort. I spent the next two years working as a banquet server and eventually becoming the event coordinator for the resort. Through this work, I discovered a love for customer service and realized that producing memorable events for people had an impact.

The Events Industry Council (EIC), the global voice of the business events industry on advocacy, research, professional recognition and standards, announces the appointment of Augustine (Gus) Chijioke as Director of Certification & Education.

 

The COVID-19 pandemic has sparked new challenges for the global business events sector. The Singapore Tourism Board, in partnership with the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA) and UFI (Global Association of the Exhibition Industry), presents a white paper that outlines how the sector can reimagine its offerings and better future-proof itself through innovation.

 

Organizations far and wide are celebrating Pride Month by showing their support for the LGBT+ community through awareness-raising efforts, fostering more diverse and inclusive cultures, and supporting progressive change. But for the LGBT Meeting Professionals Association, Pride is a year-round effort to change minds, hearts and attitudes.

 

A typical business talk on COVID says much about the impact on the schools and universities, hospitality, travel, retail and restaurants, and wellness. Not much is said about the impact on the $1,100-billion industry that facilitates business and networking and gives platforms for people to learn and network.

This guidebook, created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, was adapted from a chapter in the Events Industry Council Manual, 9th Edition, which is considered an essential resource for professionals who plan and execute events. The guidebook’s content was originally developed by Tyra Warner, PhD, JD, CMP, a respected expert in crisis management in the hospitality sector. It covers the full spectrum of risk management as applied to the events industry. This includes assessing risks that may threaten attendees, the meeting or event itself, the organiser, or partner-suppliers, and applying the appropriate measures to manage the probability and consequences of such risks.

To date, this industry-wide task force has published seven accepted practices guides: B2B and B2C Exhibitions, Business Continuity, Meeting and Event Design, Health and Safety for Hotels, Workforce and Wellness, Travel and Transportation, and Resources for Destinations. Additional resources include a Code of Conduct, Principles for Recovery, Key Questions for Event Organisers, Know Before You Go, and a Crisis Communications worksheet. After the release of each guide, EIC hosted a webinar with task force members to review the resources. You can access all of this helpful aggregated content via EIC's website and YouTube channel.

In Memoriam

This month, our events community lost two champions for sustainability and social impact: Miek Arnolda Egberts, CMP, CMM, Founder at InspireMe, Monaco, and member of the international board of directors of the Society for Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE), and Elizabeth Glau, CMP, CEO of Event Integrity.

I had the privilege and honour of collaborating with both of these extraordinary women and will miss their inspiration, dedication and strength of character.

When I first met Miek, we were preparing to host our Sustainable Event Professional Certificate course for the first time in Europe. As co-host of the programme, she helped create an environment for learning in Monte Carlo that embodied the idea that "green is the new glam." She expertly guided us through the remarkable destination with this rare combination of both genuine warmth and elegance. Her dedication to family, service to the community, and focus on strengthening our industry's commitment to sustainable action were inspiring.

Elizabeth and I first collaborated on the EIC Manual, 9th Edition, where she authored our marketing chapters. She was smart, forward-thinking and always kept in focus what was the right thing to do. She later helped us to develop our online platform for EIC's Sustainable Event Standards, combining her tech expertise with her sustainability focus. I will greatly miss spending quiet moments with her at conferences, and reading her thought-provoking posts.

As I think about how to honour the memory of these two exceptional leaders, I am left with the thought that we can all extend their legacy and impact through a renewed commitment to advancing sustainability and social impact in our industry.
