All of the sudden, it has.

Certain countries and states are opening up, discarding mask restrictions and relaxing social distancing guidelines, all while the virus is mutating with variants still wreaking havoc in certain parts of the world. Other countries see a recovery on the horizon in the next month or two. Vaccines are being taken on and off the market. Groups try to decide whether to forge ahead for attendees that are ready to travel, who are clamoring to meet face-to-face again…and who are literally zoomed out and are ready to see the world.

We’ve all seen the statistics and recognise the laser-like hit on the Tourism & Hospitality industry. Whether it came as instantly as a bolt of lightning or in slow motion like water circling a drain, the grief and loss are real, along with the resolve, resilience and outright requirement to Find. A. Job.

Lately, there are signs of recovery. Three long-time “friendfessionals” (started as a professional contact, became a friend, as so many of us do) of mine recently started similar positions in growing companies, and the number of postings on job boards is increasing.

During the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the numerous unknowns that accompany us every day there has, regrettably, been less focus on sustainability in the events industry. I say regrettably because I fundamentally believe that sustainability is necessary for businesses to thrive whether in a pandemic or not.

Sustainably is often misunderstood. Many times, we actually mean ecology when we talk about sustainability. Sustainability is not just about the environment and natural resources. This is part of it, and an absolutely crucial component, but it’s not the whole picture. In-person events create a massive amount of waste, and therefore, focusing on producing less waste and recycling are certainly worthwhile efforts, but we can do so much more.
