I earned my CMP designation in 1985. It seems just like yesterday in my mind. But, the reality is, it was 35 years ago.

It’s time for me to recertify this year, and I am eager to do it. Earning that CMP designation has helped me throughout my career. From professional opportunities to the people I’ve had as mentors and the chance to mentor along the way, it’s made a huge difference to me.

It’s also recertification time for the classes of 1990, 1995, 2000, 2005, 2010 and 2015. I hope you’ll join me in doing so. In light of COVID, EIC is maintaining the discounted rate of $225 USD until 11:59 p.m. EST on 31 December 2020.

If you still need to earn continuing education credits, then EIC Advance is the place to be 18-20 November. The programme offers an opportunity to earn 25 CEs. Equally important, there are multiple campfire sessions just for the CMP and CMP-HC community. Fellow CMPs Angie Ahrens and Derrick Johnson have a special welcome message.

Early bird registration ends on Friday, 30 October. At $199 USD, it’s an affordable way to access impactful and global educational content while making connections that can help you professionally and personally. Speaking of our community, I’m proud of the leading role that CMPs are playing in the APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force. A half dozen of our colleagues are serving on the task force, which is focused on giving voice to planning, preparing and driving the conversation on the industry’s recovery.

The guidance and resources this team is providing are outstanding. In fact, more than 32,000 people worldwide have accessed the task force tools. Recovery may be a long, uphill climb, but it’s taking shape with EIC and CMPs leading the way. Today, EIC is releasing the guide from the Travel and Transportation working group, led by Amanda Armstrong, CMP – more on that in this newsletter.

No matter where you are on your CMP journey, I thank you for your continued service and dedication to the CMP community.

Recertification

In 1985, at age 17, Boris Becker became the youngest ever winner of the men’s Wimbledon Championship.

Not to be out done, Barbara Connell, CAE, CMP, current chair of the CMP Governance Commission, earned her CMP certification in 1985 – the first year it was offered.

Ok – maybe it’s not a perfect comparison. But, unlike the retired Becker, Barbara continued her professional winning streak by recertifying every five years. She’ll keep the streak alive in 2020, too.

If you earned your certification in a year ending in zed or five, then it’s time for you to go through the process again, too. The deadline is 31 December 2020.

Do you remember highlights from the year you earned your CMP?

In 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from prison and the Berlin Wall finally fell. Windows95 and JavaScript debuted in 1995.

As memorable as those events are, investing in your personal and professional development makes all the difference. Did you know that studies show the CMPs earn, on average, $10,000 USD more than those who don’t have it?

Like Y2k, some things are meant to be forgotten. But, others – like the opening of the Tate Modern in London in 2000 ­– are meant to last. That’s the case with the CMP and CMP-HC designation. It provides lasting value. The opportunity to develop professional skills and relationships, and discover leadership opportunities, never ends.

And, while it’s not as world famous as Ellen Johnson Sirleaf’s election as president of Liberia – the first woman to lead an African nation – becoming a CMP in 2005 probably had a profound impact on your career. Hopefully, just like the first SpaceX rocket launch in 2010, it boosted it to new heights.

So, just like Sam Smith sang in 2015, “won’t you stay with me” and complete your recertification this year?

EIC has held the recertification fee at $225 USD this year. And, if you need continuing education credits, then EIC Advance is made just for you. The programme offers 25 CE opportunities, and campfire sessions devoted solely to the CMP and CMP-HC community.

2020 will be a memorable year – even though we may want to forget much of it. But, remember to recertify your CMP or CMP-HC designation. It’s a lifetime of opportunity, learning and relationships you don’t want to forget.

Events and programmes

Registration for EIC Advance, 18-20 November 2020, is $199 USD through today, 30 October. EIC Advance is open to all event industry professionals and will feature three days of innovative education, peer-to-peer connection, on-demand programming and unique CMP experiences. The keynotes will be held in local time zones – one for each of the following: Asia, EMEA, and the Americas.

EIC Advance offers a special experience for the CMP community including exclusive, deep-dive campfire sessions led by CMP Governance Commission members, as well as a bundle of a possible 25 CEs in one package. Keynotes and breakout sessions each deliver one CE toward the CMP, up to a total of 25 CEs. You will be able to revisit sessions on-demand through 31 March 2021. 

Over three days, EIC Advance will highlight our industry’s advocacy efforts and the adaptations and innovations necessary as we evolve. We will reinforce our commitment to each other and explore opportunities to build forward together.

“Congratulations!” “What an achievement!” Sentiments of support and positivity have flooded social media with the launch of EIC’s digital badges for CMPs and CMP-HCs. Thanks to all who are sharing badges – more than 5,000 across social channels and emails so far – and opening up about what your CMP means to you, and lifting up others!

EIC is working with Credly, the digital credentialing leader, to provide digital badges. Current CMP and CMP-HCs should have received an invitation from Credly’s Acclaim platform (admin@youracclaim.com) to accept a digital badge. There is no fee for the badge, and acceptance is up to you. If you have not received an email or if you have any questions, please contact certification@eventscouncil.org so we can assist.

EIC is offering support for CMP candidates impacted by COVID-19.

Application: For those seeking their CMP credential, EIC is providing $50 USD relief on the initial application and $50 USD for the certification examination fee if the applicant has been affected by COVID-19 and was furloughed, had their position eliminated or have experienced a salary reduction. Industry news

Today, the Events Industry Council released the Travel and Transportation Accepted Practices Guide. It is the latest accepted practices guide produced by EIC’s APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force.

The new guide:

  • Assists travellers in evaluating the risk level before booking a trip
  • Provides resources to educate on destination regulations and restrictions
  • Addresses major travel modalities (ground, air, rail, cruise) and highlights new safety and cleanliness policies that enhance traveller safety
  • Emphasizes the personal responsibility required to maintain a safe travel environment

“Bringing businesses, communities and people together face-to-face is at the heart of our industry’s purpose. The travel experience is a fundamental and foundational element to the journey of participation and event curation,” said Amy Calvert, CEO, Events Industry Council. “This guide is intended to be a helpful tool for us all as we contemplate our path forward. These resources represent an industry-wide commitment to safety and security, and they serve as a reminder that while we will never be able to mitigate all risk associated with travel, we have a commitment and the expertise to create safe travel and meeting experiences.”

 The guide includes information on:

  • Pre-travel evaluation, during and post-travel guidance
  • Government and travel regulation resources
  • Safety protocols by travel modes including a resource guide

“This is about building trust and confidence,” said Travel and Transportation working group Chair Amanda Armstrong, CMP, Assistant Vice President, Enterprise Holdings, Inc. “The best way to do that is to provide the information and tools needed to ‘know before you go’ as well as during a trip and afterward. That’s exactly what this guide does for the most experienced road warrior and novice traveler.”

Previous releases of EIC accepted practices guides and supporting materials include the Meeting and Event Design Accepted Practices Guide, a Code of Conduct, Health and Safety for Hotels Accepted Practices Guide, EIC Principles for Recovery, Key Questions for Event Organisers, and Resources for Workforce and Wellness Accepted Practices Guide.

The APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force is led by Co-chairs Michael Dominguez, President and CEO, Associated Luxury Hotels International (ALHI), and Kristin Horstman, Senior Director, Strategic Events, Salesforce. With representation from across the many sectors and regions of the global events ecosystem, the APEX COVID-19 Business Recovery Task Force provides a voice in planning, preparing and participating in our recovery and our future. The task force is also amplifying the story of our economic and social impact as advocates for our industry.

“The engagement with the task force resources shows how much our industry depends on centralised, accessible and trustworthy sources of information,” Dominguez said. “We are all working toward a path of recovery, and these aggregated resources continue to provide a valuable framework for meeting face-to-face again.”

Access our resources

To date, this industry-wide task force has published four accepted practices guides: Meeting and Event Design, Hotels, Workforce and Wellness, and Travel and Transportation. Additional resources include a Code of Conduct, Principles for Recovery, Key Questions for Event Organisers, Air Travel Planning, and Know Before You Go. After the release of each guide, EIC hosts a webinar with task force members to review the resources. You can access all of this helpful aggregated content via EIC’s website and YouTube channel.

 

As our industry works through the realities and impact of COVID-19, we have many valuable tools and educational resources to reference. EIC’s member organisations, as well as companies around the world, are sharing information, sparking new ideas and offering support. EIC has gathered resources and tools from various sources and centralised them into a COVID-19 resource centre. We update the site weekly. If you have information to share, please contact us.

 

The Events Industry Council On Demand offers CMP Conclave recordings, webinars and CE quizzes (more than 100 options). You can earn 1 CE by viewing each on-demand webinar and completing the quiz via the link provided. The EIC Knowledge Hub is connected to your EIC website login and can be accessed on any device with an internet connection. 

 

EIC is now a CAE Approved Provider. We will indicate programs that meet the requirements for fulfilling the professional development requirements to earn or maintain the Certified Association Executive credential. Every program we offer that qualifies for CAE credit will clearly identify the number of CAE credits granted for full participation, and we will maintain records of your participation in accord with CAE policies. As a CAE Approved Provider educational program related to the CAE exam content outline, this program may be applied for 1 credit toward your CAE application or renewal professional development requirements.

 

The EIC Sustainable Event Standards were released in September 2019 with a one-year provisional status. They can be downloaded at no charge from our website. There are seven different standards representing different sectors of the industry: event organiser, accommodations, audio visual and production, destination, exhibitions, food and beverage, and venue.
