Moving Toward a More Global Events Industry Council Glossary

By Miguel Neves, CMP, Co-Chair of the Events Industry Council's Industry Insights Council

The events industry is global both by nature and by design. In our work to bring the world together, having a common understanding of the terminology used in different global settings is helpful for us in being able to activate the vision for our events. The Events Industry Council Glossary is used to help CMP candidates prepare for their exam, as course material for college and university programmes and as a useful resource for educating industry professionals about events-related terminology. Our vision for the glossary is for it to provide greater guidance on terminology that is used both regionally and globally.

The Events Industry Council Glossary will be updated this year, and it will be relaunched in the fall with greater online functionality and more globally relevant terminology. In preparation for the update, the Events Industry Council's Industry Insights Committee convened a global review panel consisting of approximately 30 industry experts from around the globe to evaluate the glossary's terms for relevance in different regions of the world. The result of this work was the identification of an estimated 150 terms that are being considered for revision.

Our next step is to expand the review process to include more members of the CMP community. To do so, we will be hosting the Legacy Document Consultation Webinar Series: Towards a More Global Events Industry Council Glossary on 12 July, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. EDT. During this webinar, we'll review the plans for the new online glossary, including discussing the proposed search functionality. We will then review the terms being recommended for revision. This webinar is eligible for one CE hour towards CMP recertification. Please note that registration limits have been set by region to help to ensure that the glossary terms are updated with a balanced global perspective.

This work will be integrated into the latest version of the Events Industry Council Glossary. The update will also include more generic updates from the CMP community. This release is timed with an update of the Events Industry Council's website.

I am excited to make this a reality, and I want to thank you in advance for your contribution.

In a related effort, you may be aware that the Events Industry Council's CMP Commission are working in parallel to expand the reach of the flagship CMP Programme. I encourage you to contribute to this by taking the CMP Survey that is the basis of a new CMP International Study: https://www.research.net/r/EICSurvey2018
