We recently asked a few younger industry professionals why they believe its important to new CMPs or meeting and event professionals early in their career to volunteer with professional organizations and what the best ways to get involved were. Here are some of their answers:
  • It is imperative that event professionals volunteer for professional organizations because the event industry is ever changing. As a result, there is always a need for fresh ideas and a new set of eyes. It also gives those just starting off an opportunity to learn the industry and find his or her niche. —Vanessa Bass, CMP, HMCC, Sudler & Hennessey
  • Volunteering is a great way to learn about the industry, grow your professional network and fine tune skills that may be currently outside your job description. I sometimes think of it as a mini MBA in association management. —Miguel Neves, CMP, IMEX Group
  • This opens doors for young professions in so many ways. For me personally I would say the most important benefits are gaining knowledge of the industry, learning from mentors and veteran professionals in the industry, networking and growing business relationships, and lastly getting in front of potential clients and/or referrals. —Leah Wean, Quest Drape
  • It is the best way to grow your network and skills at the same time! The more you can volunteer, the more you will meet like-minded professionals who all have the potential to impact you in so many wonderful positive ways, and the more you will showcase and grow your skills. Volunteering for professional organizations has made so many direct and positive impacts on my life (both personally and professionally)! —Lydia Blanchard, Fairmont Château Laurier

What is the best way to get involved with professional organizations and what advice would you give to young professionals looking into volunteering?
  • Getting involved really just requires a little time and a desire to jump in. So, just make the first step! Visit the website, attend an event, and share your passion with other professionals. Do a little research to see which organizations provide the learning experiences and networking opportunities that resonate with you. Find an event and get started! One thing all meeting and event professionals love is another passionate professional that we can share knowledge and swap stories with. —Andrias J. White, MBA, CMP, CSEP, Events DC at the Walter E Washington Convention Center
  • Join the local chapter level of a global association such as MPI, ILEA, HSMAI, NACE, etc.  Volunteer to be on a committee, or even on the board.  The more engaged you are with the organization, the more you will benefit from it. —McKenzie Kaufeld Counts, Wildly Different
  • Get outside of your comfort zone. Take a deep breath and introduce yourself to new people.  Sit with new people at lunches and mixers.  Volunteer for things that scare you a little, and surround yourself with people that will teach you how.  Lastly, don't be afraid to ask questions. — Shannon Yeater, CMP, Butler Snow, LLP
  • Know in advance what you are hoping to get out of your time and effort, and know what skills you have to offer and/or would like to grow in a volunteer role. Also be aware of how much time you are able/willing to commit. Treat the volunteer role like you would a professional role, since whatever you take on will reflect your work ethics and skills directly as a professional. By keeping all of that in mind before you volunteer, you will be sure to find the responsibilities engaging and rewarding, and you'll be giving back to the organization & community at the same time. —Lydia Blanchard, Fairmont Château Laurier
