The theme of this year's Construction Safety Week is "Connected. Supported. Safe." Mental health is a major focus of the week, as well as the prevention of traumatic brain injuries through safety helmets that include a chinstrap and lateral protection.
  
Spending on most categories of nonresidential and multifamily construction declined from February to March as contractors struggled to find enough workers and get timely deliveries of materials, according to an analysis the Associated General Contractors of America released today regarding federal spending data. Association leaders urged Washington officials to end tariffs on construction materials and widen the opportunities for gaining the skills for rewarding careers in construction.
  
Supply challenges can often be mitigated by viewing suppliers as partners and taking a more collaborative approach to working with them. Long-term agreements and contract clauses that ensure your firm receives top priority for supplies can also be helpful, writes Praveen Kumar Soni.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), from 2015 to 2018, the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) reported 103 total trenching and excavation-related deaths, an average of 25 per year over this 4-year period. Also, the OSHA Information System (OIS) Accident Investigation Report shows that between FY 2013 – FY 2017, there were a total of 156 incidents reported in the construction industry. Moreover, between October 2018 and September 2019, there were 1,499 citations and more than $7 million in penalties issued to construction employers for failing to meet their compliance obligations under Subpart P.

OSHA 30-Hour Construction safety course is intended for supervisors or for workers with some safety responsibility. It provides a greater depth and variety of training on an expanded list of topics associated with workplace hazards than the TEXO Safety First class.
