The economic earthquakes of the past few years have posed challenges for the construction industry, and it doesn't appear things are about to change as the Associated General Contractors of America prepares for its annual convention. AGC Chief Economist Ken Simonson and Brian Perlberg, the association's senior counsel of construction law and contracts, reflect on four key factors for the industry moving ahead: the Russia-Ukraine conflict, construction's warehouse and manufacturing sector, the distribution of infrastructure funds and the incorporation of pandemic risk in contracts.

Construction input prices increased 2.6% in February compared to the previous month, according to an Associated Builders and Contractors analysis of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Producer Price Index data released today. Nonresidential construction input prices rose 2.5% for the month.

Construction input prices are up 24.4% from a year ago, while nonresidential construction input prices are up 25.1%. Input prices for natural gas and unprocessed energy materials increased for the month, rising 65.1% and 32.3%, respectively. Crude petroleum prices increased 13.7% in February. All three energy subcategories are up significantly on a year-over-year basis.

Keyan Zandy wants to improve the industry for the next generation of builders. Announced as its new CEO March 1, Zandy has worked at Skiles Group, a Dallas-area healthcare specialist contractor, for over eight years. Formerly the COO of Skiles Group,  Zandy co-authored "The Lean Builder" with Joe Donarumo, vice president of another Texas-based contractor, the Linbeck Group. Zandy led Skiles Group's shift to, and innovation in, lean construction — a practice that uses technology, culture shifts and increased planning to limit waste. He told Construction Dive that lean principles aren't proprietary, and if construction is going to advance, all builders should have access to lean strategies.

In honor of Women in Construction (WIC) Week 2022, TEXO is shining the spotlight on five incredible, capable women who are bright stars in our North & East Texas construction community and within the TEXO membership. We wanted to dig into what their day-to-day lives look like in their various niches within construction, the winding roads that brought them to into the sector, how they got involved in the association and what advice they would give to other women interested in starting careers in this important industry.
