A workplace hazard poses potential for harm. Workplace injuries and illnesses can be prevented by looking at workplace operations, establishing proper job procedures and ensuring that all employees are trained properly. Identifying hazards and eliminating or controlling them as early as possible will help prevent injuries and illnesses. A hazard assessment or job hazard analysis is a technique that focuses on identifying hazards before they occur. Hazard assessment focuses on the relationship between the worker, the task, the tools and the work environment.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced Sept. 24 that it will publish a final overtime rule, setting the minimum salary threshold for overtime eligibility at $35,568. The regulations implement the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)'s overtime mandate and, according to a senior DOL official, will make an estimated 1.3 million additional U.S. workers eligible for overtime pay. The final rule will be effective Jan. 1.
