When Ray Sedey came to Dallas in 2015 to become McCarthy Building Companies' Southern Region President, overseeing the company's activities from Texas to Atlanta, he encountered the state's special version of the national labor shortage, exacerbated by a booming economy and the Texas energy industry's manpower needs. Since then, Sedey has become one of McCarthy's driving forces to recruit new talent by changing the perception of construction industry career paths, particularly for women.
The global hotel construction pipeline climbed to an eight-year high in 2018, ending the year with 13,573 projects and 2,265,792 rooms in various stages of development and construction, according to Lodging Econometrics' Construction Pipeline Trend Report. This represents a 7 percent increase in projects and 6 percent increase in rooms in the pipeline since the end of 2017. The U.S. accounted for 41% of the global pipeline, followed by China's 20 percent. New York City, Dallas and Los Angeles were among the top five cities in the world with the most hotel projects in the works.
Plans for construction of a massive cricket stadium and sports village in Allen — a suburb north of Dallas — hit a snag Friday when one of the companies behind the project ended its involvement prematurely, though the master developer said the project will go on. Initial project estimates hovered around $500M, NBC reports. The original blueprint for the sporting village included a 15,000-seat stadium, as well as opportunities for retail, office, hotel and residential developments at the corner of Alma Drive and State Highway 121.
