Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada recently announced the launch of "additional consultations” to help guide the development of an approach for achieving Canada's fertilizer emissions reduction target. A discussion document is now available for comment until August 31, 2022, which is meant to stimulate discussion and build a path forward for reducing N2O emissions associated with fertilizer application by 30% below 2020 levels by 2030.

On July 22, 2022, the governments of Saskatchewan and Alberta expressed their "profound disappointment” that the federal government's fertilizer emissions reduction target appears to have already been set. "The commitment to future consultations is only to determine how to meet the target that Prime Minister Trudeau and Minister Bibeau have already unilaterally imposed on this industry, not to consult on what is achievable or attainable”, they claimed.

While municipal biosolids accounts for a very small percentage of the fertilizers used in Canada, efforts to reduce overall fertilizer use could impact municipal programs.
