Sponsor Spotlight: MAHONE HARBOUR FLOOD PREVENTION AND SHORELINE ENHANCEMENT PLAN

The Town of Mahone Bay boasts one of the premier scenic location in coastal Nova Scotia. CBCL was retained to develop a feasible plan for the implementation of effective flood and erosion protection measures to mitigate the impact of storm surges and high sea levels and allow the Town to beautify and enhance the shoreline. The project will be carried out in 3 stages: Site Analysis, Concept Design and Detailed Design

 

The project involved

  • Performing a site analysis and completing an environmental assessment;
  • Review of all relevant background information available, including airphotos, previous reports, Lidar survey and anecdotal flooding information;
  • Conducting a public consultation session in order to obtain information about the relevant needs and priorities of each stake holder;
  • Collecting historical wave data and performing a statistical analysis of the information to estimate extreme wave heights;
  • Developing a Mike 21 Wave Spectral model in order to simulate wave transformation along the bay and obtain design values for each one of the selected mitigation measures;
  • Developing of a stormwater model to assess the impact of extreme rainfall in the study area and its interaction with extreme water levels at the bay.
  • Concept design of mitigation measures from Mushamush River to Mader’s Cove
  • Detail design of flood mitigation measures for the Northern portion (Ernst Brook to Mushamush River)
  • Opinions of probable cost for each feasible option

In order to integrate engineering protection measures with the aesthetic enhancement of the shoreline and the development of a healthy ecosystem CBCL developed a detail design of living shorelines as coastal erosion mitigation options.  This approach will provide an opportunity for re-establishing saltmarshes and coastal wetlands in the area.
