CTA in Action: Government Affairs Update

CTA has been fighting to protect the industry from the "ABC test" created by the Dynamex Supreme Court Decision even before AB 5 was introduced. In 2018, CTA and two California independent owner-operator truck drivers sued the State of California to prevent the application of the “ABC” test to the trucking industry. On November 12, CTA amended its lawsuit to add claims challenging AB 5. View CTA's press release

Joe Guzman, Oak Harbor Freight Lines and Tony Henriquez, Dependable Highway Express were named California Trucking Association’s Drivers of the Year for Northern and Southern California respectively, during banquets held in November to honor CTA’s Drivers of the Month award recipients.

2019 Northern Driver of the Year
Joe Guzman, Oak Harbor Freight Lines

2019 Southern Driver of the Year
Tony Henriquez, Dependable Highway Express

CTA’s Driver of the Month/Year program recognizes those drivers that were nominated by their company for their outstanding driving record.

This year’s Northern Driver of the Year, Joe Guzman of Oak Harbor Freight Lines in West Sacramento is a local driver with a career of over 27 years of commercial driving. He is 1.8 million miles accident and citation free. He runs the Oak Harbor Safety Meetings, performs the monthly terminal checks, and teaches HazMat classes. Joe coaches and trains all new hires. He makes sure to take his time when he trains them to make sure they understand proper procedures and also to make sure they are familiar with the company and company processes. His supervisor says Joe is patient, dedicated, and excels at everything he does.

Tony Henriquez, CTA’s Southern Driver of the Year is with Dependable Highway Express. Tony has over 34 years as a career professional truck driver and has logged over 816,000 miles. He has been with Dependable Highway Express for 10 years. Throughout his employment, he has shown knowledge and professionalism that contribute to making the company outstanding. Since his career began 34 years ago, Tony has received an annual safety award every year. An example of Tony going above and beyond is that he makes himself available when the company is short staffed and he will stay late to make sure all pickups and deliveries are done in a safe and timely manner.

Congratulations to Joe, Tony and all of this year’s Drivers of the Month award recipients.
