CTA in Action: Government Affairs Update
Assembly Bill (AB) 5, the bill that would codify the Dynamex Decision into law, is currently in the Senate. The bill is going through the committee process where a final decision will be made before September 13th on whether the bill becomes a law. AB 5 is the #1 Priority of the Labor Federation and if the bill passes it will put an end to the owner operator business model. It is imperative that Senators hear from you, their constituents, on AB 5, so they can know how the bill will impact the trucking industry and Owner Operators in their district. As a brief background, PAGA is a 2004 law that “deputizes” every California employee to act as a State-prosecutor to sue and collect civil penalties from California employers. Though well intended, PAGA has created a cottage industry for unscrupulous attorneys that use the power of the State to extort settlements that line their own pockets, regardless of whether the lawsuits they threaten are backed by facts are not.

CTA is saddened to report the death of CHP’s Motor Carrier Safety Program (MCSP) Manager Cullen Sisskind. Mr. Sisskind passed away peacefully on July 21, 2019, following a courageous battle with cancer. He leaves behind his beloved wife Debi. Mr. Sisskind will be missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. ATRI, the trucking industry’s not-for-profit research organization, launched the 2019 Top Industry Issues Survey on Monday, July 29. The annual survey asks trucking industry stakeholders to rank the top issues of concern for the industry along with appropriate strategies for addressing each issue. Now in its 15th year, ATRI’s annual analysis not only ranks the issues overall but also provides details on where critical topics are ranked differently by motor carriers and professional drivers.
