San Francisco’s Large Vehicle Safety Working Group Meets

Last week the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) held its quarterly Large Vehicle Safety Working Group meeting in San Francisco at the SFMTA headquarters. In addition to CTA, the working group includes many of San Francisco’s agencies as well as other special interest groups. Below is a summary of some of the items discussed.

Vehicle based Safety Technologies for Vision Zero-
Presentation regarding Safety Technologies that have been researched by USDOT VOLPE Center. The SFMTA is looking into utilizing some of the technologies in some city vehicles.  Technologies presented were costly and haven’t really been utilized by many trucking companies. CTA spoke to the group and said the WG  should continue to focus on education and training for operators of large vehicles in SF.

Better Market Street Plan-
Long term project for Market Street. Focus on bike, pedestrians. They want industry input on a variety of items they are considering. Those include:

Loading Zones- Location of the zones relative to business
Time of Day Loading Zones- In bound/out bound in response to commute times
How many stops do trucks have on a route that is on market street...time of day?
Design of loading zones
Length of time for stops
Parking issues.....non delivery vehicles using loading zones

The Market Street Plan is a long term project. The SFMTA is seeking CTA’s input on the items listed above. This is a good opportunity to shape the plan for truck deliveries with limited impact. If you’re interested in being involved let CTA know.

Ride Along- The SFMTA would like to set up ride -alongs with some carriers to show them what the driver goes through on a daily basis while making deliveries in San Francisco. If you’re interested in providing a ride along let CTA know.

Parking Enforcement-
The  Parking Enforcement Division wants to help the trucking industry with enforcing motorists who double park or use loading zones. The Division is going to reach out to get information from  our member drivers on problem areas. As soon as CTA receives the information we will send it onto applicable CTA members.

If you’re interested in being a member of the SFMTA Large Vehicle Working Group (if you make deliveries in San Francisco you should be), let CTA know, for more information contact Eric Sauer at esauer@caltrux.org.
