Caltrans Moving Toward Change in Vehicle Inspection Report Policy

At this month’s California Transportation Permit Advisory Council (CTPAC) meeting in Long Beach (at the Port of Long Beach), Caltrans informed attendees that they will be making a major policy change when it comes to vehicle inspections for certain extra-legal hauling equipment. Over the past number of years, CTA and many of its Heavy Specialized Carrier members have been advocating for a change to the Inspection Policy. Previously, Caltrans utilized 3 personnel (statewide) that were responsible for inspecting certain vehicles and equipment. This led to lengthy delays for heavy haulers to get the necessary permits and move their loads and equipment. The change in policy will allow haulers the ability to utilize the applicable Caltrans Vehicle Inspection Report and accurately fill out the required details and submit it to Caltrans electronically for their approval. Guidelines providing the requirements, instructions and vehicle description will also be included.

The Vehicle Inspection Report will apply to the following:
Crane
Heavy Haul
Self-Propelled Vehicle
3,4 and 5 Axle Tow Trucks
3 and 4 Axle Tractors
Trailer Mounted Fixed Load

As soon as Caltrans officially announces the new Vehicle Inspection Report, CTA will let you know. For more information, contact Eric Sauer at esauer@caltrux.org.
