FMCSA Request for Under 21 Military Pilot

Print this Article | Send to Colleague

At the request of the FMCSA, CTA and ATA are asking that you consider applying for FMCSA’s Under 21 Military Driver Pilot Program, which would help alleviate the driver shortage by allowing qualified 18, 19, and 20-year-old military reservists, National Guard, active duty service-members, or veterans with applicable truck driving experience to drive CMVs in interstate commerce.

FMCSA had hoped for participation from approximately 70 motor carriers, but only 9 have been approved for the program so far. To help advance our industry-wide goal of broadening the labor pool of safe drivers to include 18, 19, and 20 year olds, CTA and ATA would greatly appreciate your participation in this program. FMCSA specifically reached out to ATA for support with this, so we are hoping to encourage more members to participate.

Motor carriers interested in participating in the pilot should complete an application and submit it to Under21Pilot@dot.gov. Additional information can be found here, and questions may be directed to Jay Lim at jlim@trucking.org from the ATA safety policy team.
